hi compression d
alrighty, ive searched a havent found anything useful. Im tryin to up the compression in my d16y8. Ive got a ram air intake, dc sports header, skunk 2 intake mani, gsr TB, and 2.5" exhaust with a high flow cat. i was thinking about using a6 pistons (theyre the ones with the domed top, right?) with a skunk2 camshaft and some new cam gears. what do you guys think? thanks for the help.

Re: hi compression d (frostcivic)
I am running PM6 (D16A6) pistons in my D16Z6 right now with no problems.
THey're not domed, they are still negative cc's.

Re: (soccaian)
how's your setup working out?
I picked up a D16A6 block for free...and swapped the pistons/rods into my Z6 block with my old rings I've put on about 4k miles in 4 weeks also, with ZERO problms

Must be nice...**** my car keeps leaking from seals even after i replace them

the car runs absolutely perfect... it simply has NO power at all. it just dies on the top end. i've had some discussions with a couple of techs the last time i went racing, and none of us could really come up with any ideas as to why its such a weak motor.
my only guess is cam timing and/or fuel.

Re: (soccaian)
well I'm looking for a high compression set up and someone had told me that the A6 pistons were domed, but I havent been able to find a picture of em. I could go with some aftermarket pistons but I was hoping to use some stock civic pistons to keep costs down, plus oem reliability would help me sleep better at night. so are the p29 pistons + comp ratio? thats what I'm aiming for. 11.5/1 max. also, can anyone recommend a good N/A camshaft? I've heard good things about the skunk2, but is upgrading the valvetrain a must? because I wont be able to do that immediately (girl+car+school=poor)

there is a pic of my PM6 pistons ^^^
the p29(PM7) pistons are domed, but will squeeze the air to the tune of a ~12.0:1 CR, which is a little on the high side. so you oculd either mill a small amount off the dome of the piston, or use a thicker head gasket (like a z6)
the pm6 pistons supposedly result in a 10.5:1 CR with a Y8 head.
as for a decent cam, the crower stg 2, and comp/zex stg 2 cams are about the only decently priced cams out there. valvetrain upgrades would be preferable with those cams as the lift and duration are greater than stock.

Re: (soccaian)
but are valvetrain upgrade a necessity? I mean, it'll happen later down the road but not anytime soon, unless I can snag some valves for under $300.
also, I plan on doing the installation my self. my friend just built himself a high compression z6 that runs great and hangs with preludes so if i get into some crap I could ask him or my dad. is there anything significant about puttin the new cam, cam gears, and pistons in?

ZEX/comp valve spring are like <200 USD, so thats not too big of an issue.
about the thinnest head gasket that you'll find is the stock y8 gasket which is a metal 3-layer gasket. some people remove the middle layer to increase compression (but the durability is untested)
which head gasket you go with will depend on your choice of piston and what your CR goal is.

Its the good old street tune that is bad. Have you ever heard of dyno tune I hear its good it might help.

Re: (EKSOHCV-TechRider)
so i can use the zex valve springs on the stock valves and it'll give me the performance I'll need with an aftermarket cam? I've put together a parts list so here is what I have so far. I'm not lookin for some extreme 200whp d or something, just a mild jump in performance.
1. Apexi vafc (purchased)________________$200
2. OBX fuel pressure regulator (purchased)__$90
3. zex cam ____________________________$284
4. skunk2 cam gears_____________________$130
5. domed oem piston (for + compression),
but which one?_________________________$xxx
6. zex valve springs (they recommend titanium retainers but are they necessary?)___________________________$213
total__________________________________$917

Re: (burningwrek)
I was thinking about a similar setup for my 95 ex but I've opted for just a nice new head instead w/ all the bolt ons (I only got a short ram right now) if you're comfortable with doing the work yourself I'd say you've got the right idea - me I wasn't so sure about myself after I read my helms manual on the work involved - so I'm going w/ an exospeed stage 2 head (upgraded valve train + PnP +$185 camshaft for a total of $1445)... anybody got opinions on their work? I've been on d-series.org for a couple months now and they all like exo... wish I could afford pistons at the same time but oh well... I'll be happy enough I'm sure

Just to keep things in perspective, my complete used greddy turbo kit cost exactly $900.
Something to think about.

Re: (boostincoupe)
thanks, but I already thought about turbo and I've decided this.
I think I've decided to go with the p29 pistons and a thicker headgasket, a cosmetic headgasket. what thickness headgasket do you think I'll need for a 11.0 - 11.5/ 1 compression ratio? thanks guys
