Default help with vtec solenoid

... so i know its been covered that you can use a b series vtec solenoid on a d series but can it be used the other way around? some say its just a switch, some say its a bigger switch...

heres my problem, did a b16a2 swap in a ex 4dr.. got the whole car as a donor car. when it was in the si shell it ran great. after the swap into the ex 1st and 2nd was fine, but in 3rd i could only take up to about 7-7500 and check light would come on. it would feel like hitting a governor... not like red line.. big difference.. so i swapped it with another single cam i had, and even had it checked out by honda... they said all oil passages were fine, signal was fine, oil was fine.. even tested it with another good working ecu.. exhaust system was fine, it still did the same thing.. all pointed to the vtec solenoid..

so i swapped it out for another one of mine that i knew was good in a good running no cel light car...

just tested it and same thing again...

so im thinking does the single cam solenoid regulate how much oil, or is it just like a on/off switch..?? because im thinking the b series would allow more oil as needed where as the single cam is regulated at a lower pressure rate???

but whats the difference with vtec in 1st gear compared to 3rd gear? vtec is vtec rignt.. ?? dont matter if you're going 20 and hit vtec or 50 and hit vtec.. should be same..

sorry so long but any insight would be great..

well most people pull off there cam caps and they forget about the dowel that going in the middle cam cap.. if that fell out when u pull the caps off then u will never have vtec.. did u make sure the dowel is there with the o ring?

i cant recall, but wouldnt that mean i would have no vtec at all right?? im able to hit vtec in 1st and 2nd... along with 3,4,5 but as long as i stay under 7k... as soon as i push it close to the 8k mark light comes on along with the governor feel like thing where it automatically puts me in safe mode..

when i didnt have my dowel pin in i had NO vtec at anytime.. there could be other symptoms of it tho.. pull off ur valve cover and the cam cap between cylinder 2 and 3.. there will be a dowel that goes right in the middle with a little o ring.. it will only take 15min to check it out.. but it def. sounds like ur problem
