Default Help! Tranny problem! Engine makes ticking sounds!

forgive me I'm a noob, i accidentally posted this in the CRX forum -_-'. ok so I own a '00 ex coupe (auto). My engine light was on last week but turned off, I think it was just the gas cap. Today it came on again. This time my transmission started to feel jerky in d4. After awhile it wasn't shifting into the next gear at the right time, going up all the way to 4 or 5 rpm sometimes. And after a little longer it wouldn't shift at all it just sat in the 4 or 5 thousand rpm range. As if that wasn't enough it makes a ticking soundle when sitting idle.

Am i in serious ****? I was gonna do an oil change pretty soon it's about due. That's all i can think of for now. Help please

Did you read the code for the CEL? That would be where I'd start.

try changing the fluid before doing anything else.

replace all fluids with new original honda fluid. make sure the auto transmission fluid is filled to the correct levels. your ticking noise may be your valvetrain. after the fluids are changed, check the valve clearances. if your engine is all gummed up from you not changing the oil, it may be time to do a internal cleaning.

alright i changed all the fluids. the ticking was the due to the need of an oil change. But my tranny is still kinda spazzy. Sometimes the shifts are smooth, other times its a hard jolt. If i drive it for too long for some reason it gets stuck in 1st gear and it'll rev to like 6,000 rpm and wont shift to the second gear by itself. when this happens if i put it in neutral and then back into D4 i hear a loud ca-clunk and the car gets a good shake.

anybody got any idea's as to what's my problem? do i need a new tranny?

Did you change the tranny fluid yourself? If so, what color was the fluid when you drained it?

That's your problem right there. Tranny fluid dosen't get dirty and turn brown or black like motor oil does unless there's a problem in the tranny. It should always be red. Any other color is a good indicator that you have a problem in the tranny. Unfortunatly, auto trannys aren't DIY friendly so there's not much you can do for it yourself.

ATF should be changed way before it has a chance to darken. Even so, dark brown and blackish ATF is a definate sign of tranny problems.

ok so in an odd turn of events i found that if the tranny gets all weird, all i have to do is turn the engine off and turn it back on again, everytime i do that the tranny works absolutely fine, until it starts not shifting and revving to high. Also when it does shift i hear a loud clunk and feel a jolt.

Think it mgiht be miss-alignment or something?

I guess ill just take it to a mechanic.

It's an auto tranny. It dosen't have a clutch. You can alway try changing the oil once more before you spend too much money on it. The torque converter holds alot of fluid, so changing the oil once might have diluted it to a point, but probably not enough considering you said it was almost black when it came out.

it is an auto tranny but yes they do have clutches, and it sounds like they are gone

the loud clunking sounds also sounds like you have some hard parts that need replaced,

call an importer and get a price on a used tranny, 150-300 bucks usually

if you take it to a shop they are gonna charge u a grand easily

Your civic dosen't have a filter on the tranny that you can replace. I'd take it to a shop and have it checked out before you fork out any money for a replacement tranny. I've seen people spend over $1000 rebuilding their tranny, only to find out that it was actually the torque converter that went bad.
