When was the last time you replaced the timing belt? How many miles do you have on your motor? If you don't know, I'd recommend you replace your timing belt asap along with tensioner and waterpump if you haven't already done so. You'll never know when it'll break on and trash your valves.

anyhow, you'll need to loosen the bolt on the tensioner, rotate the crank counter clockwise so that the cam gear moves 3 teeth, and tighten the tensioner up to spec.

HT member Poison did a great how-to on replacing the timing belt on a D16z6. It's similar to any D series motor

I believe it is the only bolt that is exposed through the lower timing belt cover. It is a 14mm bolt, goldish in color.

to tighten it, remove the upper timing belt cover so you can watch the belt, and remove your spark plugs. there's a little black grommet on the lower timing belt cover. pop that out, and you can fit a 14mm 3/8" drive socket on the tensioning bolt. loosen it 180 degrees, and turn the crank (17mm) counter clockwise so it rotates three teeth. tighten it to spec (i forget), then move the crank 5 or 6 complete revolutions so the belt gets set.

if you're going to replace it, do the water pump at the same time. at 116k you definately should. it's really not to difficult. but if you still have ac and power steering you'll have to deal with that. also there is one ******* stupid bolt on the lower timing cover that makes you remove that entire front ac mount to get to it. make sure you've got either an impact or one of those crank pulley holder tools to get the pulley off. i do not recommend you stick a screw driver in the flywheel teeth to hold it, as you can break something. helms manual is your friend.

There really is no way to get to it without the crank pulley in the way. If it weren't such a problem getting the crank pulley bolt off this would be a more user friendly project to tackle. Anyway, here is that DIY Cuong was referring to.

shouldn't need one unless the valve timing is off before you put the new belt on and set it correctly. The cam drives the distributor, if the ignition timing was set when the cam timing was off, you'll need to set it properly.

Yes because I have so much to gain from lying tp someone over the internet. Rephrase. There was no way for me to get to that bolt because my mount would not budge. So I had to remove the crank pulley.
