Default Help: Starter or Alternator?

My 92 dx won't start or even turn over. When I turn the key, I just get a series of rapid clicks, and then the power dies.

Tyler

P.S. I searched so and found nothing like this

sometimes when the batery is completely gone it wont even jump start, go to autozone and have them charge the battery and get a free loaner battery and try that if it still doesnt start its the starter, but if it does start test the alternator to make sure thats not whats causing the battery to die

ok, i'll try that. I have a feeling its the alternator though, because it almost turned over last night, but then the power ran out.

the alternator doesnt do anything untill the engine is started, its just the batt and starter during starting, judging by your saying it almost started id say it you batt not the starter

Just put a new battery in and it started right up. It could still be the alternator but for now it was the batter, I just gotta be on the look out for my light diming and what not. Thanks, anyother input is still welcome.

^^ Yep, but that's only a failsafe (idiot light). Go to autozone and have the real test done, that way if it is bad, you'll know and won't ruin a perfectly good brand new battery.

Do you honestly believe that the autozone alternator test is that good? Trust me, ive had 2 people have bad alternators, with the battery light blinking, get them tested there and they say its the battery....

True I guess, probably just a bunch of kids running the equipment that don't know what they're talking about. The thing with the light though, the alternator could be charging below spec, but not enough to turn the light on yet. That will slowly ruin the battery if it's not taken care of.

Went and had my alternator tested today w/ new battery, turns out the battery was the problem in the first place. My alternator was functioning just fine!

Thanks to everyone that posted

charge your battery like stated above. if you have access to a multimeter you can check your alt. yourself. once the car is running ground the multimeter. on the back of the alternator there is a stud where the batt hooks up. touch the positve lead there and read what the alt. is putting out. you are looking at a min of 13.8 or 13.9 volts. if you have that it means the alt. is working and your battery is not holding a charge. also when you do that test on the alt., turn on your headlights, ac if you have it and watch the meter. the alt should inrease output for the load.
