Agreed, sometimes salty water can find it's way into the connector and corrode it. Actually very common with these cars.

Mine was like that when I first got my civic. It would start working after I drove for about 10 minutes with the heater on. I pulled my gauges out, pulled out the speedo assembly and re-soldered the board on the back and that fixed it. Hope that helps...

true beans. however,
after viewing some wiring diagrams...
it also heavily depends on the model and year; sometimes the speedo, odo/trip drive circuits are all together, sometimes the speedo and tach are one connector, different drive circuits, but in any event you could just have a bad ground somewhere, a wiring backing out of a connector or corrosion. help us help you holmes.

I had this problem when I bought my car, had it fixed at a speedometer place (http://tacomaspeedomter.com) for $130, dropped off the cluster and picked it up the next day worked ever since... Still not sure what they did but apparently they said its really common with honda's... They just called it a speedometer rebuild... My speedometer and odometer both didnt work. (And when one started to work they both worked)
