Default Help with slipping clutch on 99 Civic EX....!!!!!

I'm posting this for a friend who having problems with his clutch/transmission etc...

When driving the car will sometimes just pop out of gear randomly, and it makes this horrible grinding/scraping sound when decelerating in gear... Also, if you put the car in fifth gear, and slowly release the clutch, the car will not stall, and will start to slowly walk, will a small bit of resistance... Is this a definite bad clutch, or has nething similar happened to anyone else...? We just changed the tranny fluid two days ago, so the fluid is brand new... Any help would be appreciated...

Also, the clutch was just replaced about 4 of 5 months ago with just about 6,000 miles on it... TIA...

What clutch was put in it, and was the flywheel resurfaced? That will eat clutches.

Yeah, he said he purchased an OEM clutch kit from the dealer... He had it all installed at a local shop... He also had the rear main seal replaced at the same time... Could a leaking rear main seal cause the symptoms and problems described above...?

A way to check the rear main is to pull off the inspection plate ( 2 10mm's) and see if there's oil in there. A clutch will soak up that oil and could cause those symptoms.

By inspection plate, you mean the flywheel cover...?

My friend had this same problem with his Saab. Then it ended up getting a lot worse. It'd pop out of 1st gear, and gradually grew to a point where he had to hold 1st gear in. Then it'd also pop out of 3rd often, not as bad as 1st, and reverse eventually did the same as 1st. Now he can't even put it in reverse.

When he originally got the car back from the clutch installation and rear main seal replacement, he said the clutch acted funny back then... He said it slipped somewhat, but gradually got worse... He took it back to the shop that did the installation about a month or so afterward, and explained to them the symptoms and problems... He said they pulled his car around, removed the flywheel cover, found "fluid" on the flywheel, (which I'm assuming to be oil, but I haven't seen it for myself) and told him he had a crack in his bell housing...

So he continued to drive it, thinking his tranny is fucked, but after explaining the situation to me, it sounded like there was possibly more to it... What doesn't make sense to me is how the shop new there was crack in his housing if they never removed the tranny...? He said he is also losing oil in the motor, about a quart or so every two weeks...

He just went out and purchased a brand new oil pan gasket, and we're gonna replace that and make sure it's not leaking from there... If it continues to leak, would you all say it's the rear main seal...? All comments and opinions welcome...
