HELP!! replaced harmonic balancer now more problems
Hello! I have a 2000 manual civic ex. I replaced the harmonic balancer last night and tightened the belts. The car was running well for about an hour until it started to smell like burnt rubber and smoke was coming out while I was waiting at a light. Now my battery light is flashing at me. I checked the new harmonic balancer and it seems like it isnt spinning while the car is on. I am not sure what this means? I didnt use a torque to tighten the harmonic balancer bolt. could I need to tighten it with torque? Why could the battery light be on? Please help me! I need my car back asap!!!!

Did you get the key way aligned and get the little piece of metal back in on it? Sounds like the crank and pulley were just hand tight and turned together because of the pressure against each other, then the vibrations caused the bolt to come loose and now your pullet isn't spinning. Make sure you have that on there and torque that bolt on there to factory spec.

I am actually not sure what the key part is? I bought a brand new balancer at auto zone and just took of the old one a replaced it with the new one. When I took it apart all I had was the bolt and balancer. Which part would be the key??

The crank and pulley both have a little slot, or key way, cut into them. There is a little piece of metal that goes in there that ensures that they spin together. Here's a pic of what it looks like next to the pulley bolt.

I'm not sure if they sell it at auto parts store. Your best bet would be a local dealer, or getting it off a parts car at a local junkyard. If you have any race shops that work on a lot of Honda engines nearby, they'll have some laying around for sure.

Thank you! I also found some woodruff keys I am going to try from advanced auto parts. They do not sell squares in the right size so they suggested to try semicircle as long as the width is the same.
