Help: rambling noise up front on a del Sol
OK, just wondering if anybody had the same problem and/or can suggest a solution.
I have a '93 del Sol SI, and ever since I got it I've noticed a muted but persistent rambling sound coming from the front. It appears usually around 30-50mph and escalates a little bit as the car goes faster. The noise is rythmic, like something is wobbling as it rotates. It's not that loud, sort of a background to the engine noise, but still annoying. It doesn't come from the engine - the noise remains the same if I step on the clutch and rev up. I put on new tires, no change. Had a brake job, nada. Replaced front LCA bushings, CV boot, nothing. Pretty frustrating. Any ideas?

Hmmm, could be suspension, but the noise sounds like something is rubbing as it is rotates. Something in the steering, perhaps? What would be the 1st thing to check? The car has tons of miles on it, forgot to mention that.

Well, tires are fairly new, less than four months old. What could be wrong with the tire that could make noise? I check inflation pressure regularly.

I dunno I'm getting a weird noise too but I can only hear it when I'm at like 1/4 throttle its nice a rubbing/ticking sort of noise. I checked my passanger side drive axel and it looked fine but I didn't get a chance to check the drivers side.

Yeah, that kinda sounds like what I have... maybe like a railroad train rolling in the distance? Hard to describe noises, I know. I don't hear it when I'm on the throttle, either.

lift the front of car off the ground with the steering wheel locked stright pos.... or as close as you can get .... (be sure to chalk the rear wheels when doing this ...)
pick a side to start with and grab the right or left front wheel at 9 and 3 pos. as if it were a clock , try to move the wheel gently , you should not have to use a ton of force , if the wheel in locked pos, wobbles from side to side .... you have exessive play in your wheel bearings and they will need to be replaced as app.
to check an axle ..... the sure fire way to check it will req. to put the car on a lift ... there is no way to safely test it on the ground ... unless you remove the axle ..
once the car is lifted ... use a straight egde .... ruler, pipe, prybar etc.... and hold it firmly in position just slightly against the axle shaft ... (keep in mind the vehicle need to be in gear and wheels in motion to perform this test )... if the prybar does not move in your hand when rested against the axle shaft , there is no problem with the axle being bent , if the bar does not ret against the axle smoothly and moves witht eh rotation of the axle shaft then the axle is bent .... hope this helps
