Default Help plz - thinking of buying a Sol?

Hi,

I just found a 1994 Black Honda Del Sol with 140,000 miles on it. Automatic and is in great interior and exterior shape.

This is car is going to be for my fiance. she saw it on the car lot and fell in love with it. which surprises the hell out of me because she said she would never buy used but anyways.

my background: I am very mechanically inclinded, ive done engine swaps, turbo installs, motor swaps, auto to manual conversions, etc. most of which on the Nissan 240sx from the same year range. early 90's, S13's and S14 to include the 350z which i have right now.

My question are based since i do not know the honda plat from at all:

1: the seller is asking $4000 OBO. other than car fax is that a good price?

2: mechanically what should i look for before buying. Im sure i can take digital pictures and even post if needed if anyone on here can help me.

3: also, at 140,000 miles, im comfortable with other engines i know about in that being no big deal, but on this engine is 140K pushing the limits at all.

4: Are engine swaps not a big deal? what are the options

5: is an auto to manual swap overly expensive or hard at all.

6: what engine comes in the car? are their multiple engines for diffent year models or trim levels? what do i look for?

7: PLEASE and help will be greatly appreciated. WE are super serious on buying this car..

Also, if anyone is comfortable with it, i would love to speak on the phone and get questions answered if anyone wants to, let me know and i will message my number of vice versa?

Thank you so much.

Jason

to me 4 is a bit much... ive looked at del sols for probably not as clean interior or exterior but price wise have been around 2.5-3+
a del sol is a civic basicly..
there are different models.. all the same thing basic difference,,, the big difference is some came with single cam motor and some came with dual cam (b16) which of course would cost more... also disc or drum brakes
im sure someone else will chime in with more info

The best place you could possibly go is

http://www.teamdelsol.com

Click on Information along the top bar, then bring up the FAQ, and read around. While you are there, check out the How-to section for tons of ideas for mods and such...engines are a breeze to swap...tons and tons and tons and tons and tons of info on this site right here for every question you could possibly ask.

Basic Info

93-95 del Sol

S--102 HP, d15b7 sohc non-vtec
Si--125 HP, d16z6 sohc vtec

[only offered] 94-95 VTEC--160 HP, b16a2 dohc vtec\

Other differences in the 96-97 Sols, but not applicable in this scenario...

Anyways, glance over the link I provided, and you will quickly be surprised with the wealth of info available for this lil car.

The only other thing that I can possibly think that you would need is maybe an opinion about the price...

Well, without knowing the trim level, it is hard to say, but from a lil deductive reasoning, I know you are not looking at a VTEC model...no auto offered and that would be an amazing price!

Then it comes down to Si vs S, and from a stealer, er, dealer, the Si would probably be marked up to around 6,000 or so, thus my guess is it is an S model.

My advice? Check out http://www.craigslist.org Si's go for around 4,000--6,000 depending on condition (ie $6,000 craigslist del Sol will have less than 100,000 on the clock and be in pristine condition) while an S model can go for as low as $1,500 and upwards of $3500.

Just food for thought.

That sol is 14 years old almost, has 14 years of driving on it.

ive read quite a bit already and im sureits probably an S model. ill check tomorrow. thanks so much for your help. I would love to buy a lower priced one and fix it up. but this is a car thats not for me. my fiance is the type that wants to buy it and drive it. she loves aftermarket when it comes to alarm, cd changer and wheels but other than that she wont let me do anything to the level that i do with Nissan 240's or my 350Z.

thats why i need to make sure i buy something thats gonna run for the most part and have little down time, but thats okay because we have multiple cars.

thanks jake,

jason

? I think you may have gotten a little twisted by what I was saying...I was just throwin out average price ranges that I have seen...with $6000 being the extreme high end.

I agree completely tho, $6,000 for a car that has 14 years worth of abuse is def not a good deal!

Def a lot more of a pricetag, but its a lot more of a car as well.

70,000 Miles
5 Speed
DOHC VTEC engine
Obviously well taken care of

Hello Jason

1: the seller is asking $4000 OBO. other than car fax is that a good price?
Check KBB and go from there. To mean that sounds a bit high and the price can be worked on.

2: mechanically what should i look for before buying. Im sure i can take digital pictures and even post if needed if anyone on here can help me.
make sure nothing is leaking no rust. you know the usual

3: also, at 140,000 miles, im comfortable with other engines i know about in that being no big deal, but on this engine is 140K pushing the limits at all.
its a honda engine not really

4: Are engine swaps not a big deal? what are the options
i believe the s came with a d15
and the si came from a d16z6 roughly 125 hp
and the vtec came with the b16 160hp
as far as engine swaps i hear there are pretty easy plug and play

5: is an auto to manual swap overly expensive or hard at all.
i heard not at all i plan on getting mine done this week actually ill let you know.

6: what engine comes in the car? are their multiple engines for diffent year models or trim levels? what do i look for?
look at 4

7: PLEASE and help will be greatly appreciated. WE are super serious on buying this car..
I love my del sol. I drove other car but I fell in love with this little car. I have alot of mileage on my baby and it still pulls hard. honda haha
