Help... OBD plug won't read for emissions test (1996 EK w/ JDM B16)
I tried searching and couldn't find any information on this. I am trying to get my emissions done in Georgia and am having problems with my 96 EK with a JDM B16. Each time I have tried, the emissions computer says that it can not read the car's OBD (or something about not being able to connect to the car).
The car originally had an OBDII GSR ECU that was tripping a knock sensor CEL. It would only come on driving anything over 30 mph. I swapped that out with a chipped P28 and no more CEL and everything runs fine. I have tried getting the emissions done with both ECUs and both times the computer won't read the car's OBD.
I've heard that the slightest thing can cause the OBD not to be readable (i.e. missing fuse) but not sure what it could be.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Was the GSR ecu a USDM or JDM ecu? i've been told JDM ecu's use a different protocol and a usdm code reader can't communicate with them. The P28 on the other hand is an OBD1 ecu, and therefore wont be able to communicate with the emissions computer/code reader. Correct me i'm wrong, but doesn't the ecu have to be the same obd type as the car or newer for emissions? If this is true the P28 wont pass anyway, i'm really not sure, we don't have emissions testing here, just an annual safety inspection.

A knock sensor code is a relatively easy fix. The P28 has no knock sensor programming at all and therefore won't throw a code if a knock sensor is damaged or disconnected. Check the wiring for the knock sensor, and check to make sure the secondary O2 sensor is installed correctly, then try it again with the P72.
If nothing else works, make friends with someone in South Carolina and register your car at their address.

This may be a dumb question but would any other OBDII ecu work for emissions without having to run the knock sensor wire? Such as an Honda Civic SiOBD II ecu or even a OBD II Civic EX ecu?

I thought all b-series vtec motors came with knock sensors? My JDM b16 block came with a knock sensor I don't know why yours didn't. Anyway, if you want a OBDII B16 ECU, get the one out of the 99-2000 Civic SI's. Their ECU code is P2T.
