help a newbie build a single cam..
hey guys im new here..hope to increase my knowledge...anyways heres the thing im intrested in building up my d16 just the basic eg si motor.. but i wouldnt no where to start? this week im gettin my ecu chipped to improve little things here and there but nothing that special. My motor is completely stock with just a basic short ram intake. Im located in toronto, canada and just not sure parts are good and what is the correct way? inform a newb :D

Well you can complete the basic bolt-on's.
A Bisi header would be a nice start as well as a 2.5" exhaust. Ported t/b and a ported intake manifold or aftermarket replacement is a good start. Proper tuning device and fuel set-up (i.e. OEM DOHC or Walboro pump if needed, Injectors etc..) It all depends on how extensive you want to go. Just saying you want to "stay all motor" can leave it up in the air.
You can do a basic engine rebuild with OEM pistons to the compression of your choise as there are quite a few choices available. Or you can have the block resleeved, overbored and do forged internals.
As far as the head goes port and polish, upgraded valvetrain and the cam of your choice to match your compression and overall goals with the motor. Skunk2, ZEX and Exospeed offer some nice street cams. Crower offers quite a choice of cams to suit your needs from mild to wild.
These are just some run of the mill things to get you started. Hang out and do some searching around. Trust me there are LOTS of articles are D-Series performance.

to answer your question, i would boost. i have 25psi capable pistons and rings for $110, if you score some LS rods for cheap and machine them to fit and buy the bushing's it'll set you back like $100, that's boosting 15psi on stock sleeves

If you just want a semi-quick car to get around just do a mild build.
Higher compression pistons
Stronger connecting rods
Head work with porting
Milder camshaft
Header
Intake
Upgrade the intake manifold (JG)
Chip
Should get you around town fairly quick. If you want to go around town really fast...definitely need to turbo it.

nice car man. as for your question youd be a lot better off boosting then going all motor. it wouldnt be worth all the money on the D series(imo). Youll be quite satisfied with a boosted D for a while. till you save up enough for a swap
