Is it burning a lot of oil? Compression/leakdown tests.

You can rent the tools from an autoparts store. If you check the FAQs at the top of the page there are links to outline how to perform both tests. I'm thinking your rings are shot. Maybe go straight for the leakdown test.

The black smoke is fuel, the blue/grey smoke is oil, white normally means water getting in the cylinders. Maybe the white you see is just steam from starting your car up then reving it right after. Not really a good thing to do.

+1 on bad rings. Probably gummed up oil control rings stuck on the lands, no longer contacting the cylinder walls.

I had a y8 that was burning a quart every 500 miles, but had perfect compression numbers. Never got around doing a leakdown since I was going to junk it anyway. I've got some horrifying photos of what I found inside if you're interested.

That's a stupid way to mask the problem. Higher weight isn't going to fix a damn thing.

No, you need to read the FAQs for how to do a compression test, and a leakdown test. No head removal required.
