Default Help with intake.

I've been geting mixed signals about going cold air or just short ram. Further than that I can't decide on a brand, kinda a toss up between AEM or K&N. Any suggestions?

Make a custom intake: I've been through many intakes... eBay, AEM short ram, CAI, generic short ram etc, and this setup is by far my favorite. I used the DIY setup like the one at bretq's site: http://www.geocities.com/bretq/modifications.html
but I cut a 3 inch chrome pipe from a short ram to fit the setup... I needed to buy a 3.00 inch to 3.25 inch silicone step coupler to attach the pipe to the stock intake elbow. Then I ran a 3 inch dryer hose from the stock intake box to the front air dam as pictured. I can run it with the box open or closed. The great thing about this setup is that it utilizes the stock hardware and combines the best of both worlds (short ram and CAI) much like the Comptech ice box.

^^^you're not getting maximum airflow or filtration out of that filter because of the holster you left intact.

what do you mean by holster? If you are talking about the bottom half of the stock intake box, then yes, you are right that this is slightly inhibiting the full flow of air on the lower half of the filter.... a larger "custom fabricated" box about the size of an NSX airbox would be more ideal with a pipe going to the high beam light position allowing maximum air induction. This is my main problem with the design of the Comptech Icebox (the airbox is too small, leaving little airspace around the filter element).... that and the fact that it uses a UNI foam air filter.

Regarding filtration... as long as there isn't a leak in my system (which there isn't) then filtration isn't affected... i.e. removal of contaminants before they reach the engine.

The issue you bring up is precisely why I leave the top of the box off... I have tried the filter without the box, and there wasn't a noticeable difference in throttle response. I am too lazy to custom fab a box

I have a replica Apexi filter, and from my experience, it has been my favorite. i have also heard from many sources that they give max hp because of the open-ended design.

Yes, do not spend more than $40 on an intake. All intakes are the same, the only thing that matters is the filter. Spending anything more than $40 is just plain stupid.

ITG filters are some of the best filters you can get. Supposed to be way better than K&N

That would be the idea. Pretty much all pipes are made the same, but the filters make a little bit of a difference.

If legality is a concern then stick with a name brand system with a CARB EO#.

As for CAI vs short intake, there's no real noticeable difference over stock except for a lighter wallet.

On a stock D16Z6 Civic tested on a 248C Dynojet the Iceman CAI and the Iceman short ram both made 3 peak hp over stock. The CAI configuration did have a peak gain of 6hp in the midrange but in daily driving that 6hp is not noticeable and you'd be out about $200 or so. This all resulted in less than a half second improvement in the 1/4 mile and less than a mile an hour increase in the 1/4 mile trap speed.

I would recommend an Iceman because you can configure the intake as a CAI or short ram. The Iceman also did not have any losses, unlike the 1-2hp loss below 3000rpm with an AEM CAI on the same car.

Something like this is all up to you. Getting random answers H-T isn't going to persuade your purchase. Get what you want.

My personal preference is the knockoff J's Racing style intakes on ebay. The red "whale *****" intake. I love the way it sounds, and the sense of increased throttle response. Plus, it sounds great. Get a good filter, as everyone else has said.

Fun & affordable!

How much do the knockoffs go for?

Pretty damn cheap, I got one for around $40 + shipping last year. Just do a search on ebay, they usually run as much as "AEM" knockoffs, and such.

Passwordjdm sells a carbonfiber knockoff, but its more pricey. A friend has one on his B16 coupe, and it sounds incredibly mean, and adds that "bling" to your engine bay if you're into that kind've thing.

I don't know about you, but I'm into "cheap", as long as I'm not cutting corners too much.

(I'm limited to posts, as a n00b again... so I'll check ebay tonight and see what I dig up and let you know, It has been awhile since I've bought it. It did come with a very cheap *** filter, though, but what do you expect, its ebay)

bah, a 3" heating duct connected to my stock IM, to where the stock airbox used to sit, a heating duct elbow and another peice of heating duct going into the hole where the stock aribox connected to the stock piping and a second elbow connecting at last a Ractive filter where the stock intake resonater used to sit and sealed aformentioned piping with duct-tape will have to do till the motor swap, why spend money on a motor thats gona sit in the garage in a few months? the thin material and lack of sound-damping creates an incredibly loud roar, its sucking up cold air, noticible diffrence under the pedal at high rpm. ghetto, but effective.

31$ off ebay, with a filter.

Ceramic coated it myself, amsoil foam air filter, filters fantastically, very high flowing, 23$ and its lifetime, reoil once a year and wash with soap and water. Made the engine deeper. Some guy made his own CAI and dyno'd it versus a AEM CAI. he ceramic coated the inside AND outside tho. The difference was 1hp. Also, if ya dont have a EX or SI with the hole, dont bother cutting that big hole in the frame, get a short ram and ceramic paint it yourself to help it a big. Power difference is pretty much unnoticable between a SRI and CAI.

I apologise for the ducttaping, it was sturdy tho, but is now secured properly.

P.S. I'm afraid of hydrolock and drive in the rain everytime it rains, and I love puddles.
