Default Help! Engine sounds funny!

Okay, here is the situation:

1: Engine starts up and sounds great (when it is just on w/out pressing gas).

2: I press the gas pedal once and then it idles funny. Goes rrrmmmm...duhhh...rrrrmmm...duhhh....

3: I turn on the lights and it evens out.

4: I take off and start driving. When it is in neutral it does the funny idle thing again.

What the heck is the problem? Is it electrical? How do i find out what is going on.

My car is a 93 civic hatchback DX w/ b16a sirII motor swap. I just installed a B&M fuel pressure regulator and a Skunk 2 type R manifold. It happened after the swap. I running the fuel pressure at about 40-41 psi. Any help? I would appreciate it. If you know some stuff, please email me.

Thank you

At about what rpm does it idle at? You might need to adjust your idle.

It actually starts making the funny idle once the engine warms up. Also the funny idle is like hitting 1000 rpms and then jumping to like 1800 then down to 1000 and so on....How do i adjust the idle? If the idle needs to be adjusted, then would it do that funny idle all the time or just sometimes like mine?

Thanks,

Ok, it shouldn't be the idle.
I was thinking that it might have been hitting low rpms. But that's not the case.

Well,

it is doing it a little different. When I stop at the light for like 30 sec or at a stop sign for a minute, the idle levels out. Then today some truck was trying to race me, so I handed his *** to him. But at the next light I stopped and it was perfect. No funny idle what so ever. I then take off and hit the next light and it comes back again. What is up with this. I need some help! Perhaps it is idling too low. Oh, it is going from like 900 to about 1300 rpms now. Not as hard as it was yesterday, but it is going lower now. Whats up? Please help!

Thanks

The Ghostbusters?

Take it to a mechanic, tell them to look at it and see what's up.

i have the same problem with my b16. it has a type r intake manifold. the idle air control valve is brand new type r.. so i think it is related to the greater volume in the plenum. i stuck a playing card in between the manifold and the iac valve and that fixed it.... for now. when i first start the car, i have to give it some throttle to compensate for the lack of an iac valve, but with the amount i drive the car, i don't mind. here's an easy way to find out if the iac valve is your problem. the iac valve is on the back of the intake manifold on the left side close to the throttlebody. it has a black horizontal cylinder and a connector that faces down. disconnect the connector... the idle should level out but your check engine light will come on. this is why i bypassed it with the playing card. yea yea.. i know its cheeseball.. but it does the trick. when i get the car back up and running, im considering poking small holes in the card to allow a small amount of air to pass thru the valve. but being that i haven't tried it yet, im not sure if it will work or not. hope this helps.

sweet. So then I'll just disconnect the connector you talked about and it should idle out correctly? So if I place a card between the two letting no air pass, it should idle correctly? What is it for then? I'll do it. Thanks alot.

Any more suggestions?

Peace

Well I unplugged the connector and it made it worse. When I pressed the gas pedal, going in reverse, it started to spudder like it wasn't getting gas. So I plugged it back and it was all good. This is so weird. Now it just does it when it wants to, once the engine gets warm. Some times I'll gun it and then stop and it is fine. Sometimes it does the funny idle. Please help. What is going on? I need more suggestions.

Peace

the iac valve works like a choke. it allows more air into the engine until it warms up. that is why i have to give my motor some throttle when it is cold. i had the same problem with my car when i disconnected my iac as well.
i didn't say drive it with it disconnected... just start it up... rev it up a couple times.. and when it starts to hunt for an idle speed... disconnect the iac. if the idle stops fluctuating, then you know the iac is your problem.

I will try to do that. It stops when i turn the lights on. After a minute or two, it will find an idle and stick to it. I kind of does it on and off. Do you think it is the iac? And if it is...is there a permanent fix?

Peace

check your fitv(fast idle thermal vavle) its under your throttlebody. there are 3 10mm screws that hold it on the throttle body. take it off, take off the plate on the bottom, and there should be a white plug like thing. if its unscrewed all the way, then thats your problem. i havent done it in a while, but the white plug has one long slot for a fat flat head screwdriver, screw it in with that, there should be a spring under it pushing it up, so you have to put pressure on it to screw it down. try that and see what that does.

If I am going to take off the throttle body, I should empty the coolant? I am going to check that sensor with teh valve in it and I need to take off the throttle body to get to it, and I was just wondering if I should empty the coolant.

Did it work after you replaced it? I was told to check the valve under the throttle body and make it hand tight. It should stop the idling. So before I go out and buy another icv, I want to see if that valve is loose. So when i take off the throttle body should I empty out the coolant?

Peace

BTW the FITV can be tighten WITHOUT removing it from the TB or car. You can get the little screws that hold the plate on and tighten the white plunger with a shorty flat blade screwdriver.

Running ES engine mount inserts has it downsides.

Well the **** is really tight so it isn't that. I guess I need to get a new Idle control valve. Is the one off the like 92 integra compatible? Or must it be from a 94 and up car? Also do you know where I can find one? The local junkyards won't part out the ICV. They want me to buy the entire motor. So any help would be great.

you screw the screw in all the way,but not tight then turn it back out 1/2 turn...PM WykidEG6, and he'll explain it- he's encountered alot of cars out here that do that...

I am pretty sure it is the icv. I think I just need to change it. Anyone know where I can get one? I really want it bad. The car doesn't run the funny idle as loud anymore, but it still bugs me. Any help would be great.

Peace
