HELP DECIDING WHAT ROUTE TO GO WITH ENGINE
95 cx hatch. i want a daily that can hold its own. i currently have a 99 LS 90k motor w. GSR tranny LSD. at first it was fast but now i need more. here are my options Go LS VTEC w. B16 head, buy a JDM B16 rated at 170hp stock and mate it with my GSR LSD tranny and have a killer combo (1300$ for long block) or JDM B18C at 190hp. (1600$ long block).
i drive it 60 miles everyday what would give me optimal reliablilty and power.

Re: HELP DECIDING WHAT ROUTE TO GO WITH ENGINE
that's a tough question to answer without knowing what you plan on doing with your car. in other words, what do you mean by hold its own? are you solely going to use it for dd and only need it to pass traffic or will you use it for some track/auto-x too? do you plan on boosting it ever, modding it but staying n/a, or keeping it bone stock?

^Agreed, and we know most everyone does it...but I wouldn't publicly advertise that I did it.
The track is where you can race legally, and safely.
I'd go with B18C. I had have a B16 and miss my B18.

I would go with the b18c for the reliabilty as a DD and also since you have an ls already I don't think you'll like the slight decrease in torque with a b16

Re: HELP DECIDING WHAT ROUTE TO GO WITH ENGINE
ya, if you are only going with bolt ons, b18c for sure!! ls vtec isn't generally as reliable, and the b16 is my last choice in terms of performance...but its better than the ls vtec for reliability..

Re: HELP DECIDING WHAT ROUTE TO GO WITH ENGINE
if u want to save cash just take your head off and go ls vtec, change your water pump and oil pump and timing belt, get a new ls head gasket, put the ls-vtec kit on and wire it for vtec, your lookin at 1k tops with everything including the head b16 or gsr
put sum b16 pistons in it keep your rods
also its a quick and reliable swap
you already got a good tranny so keep that , and the vtec wires theyres only 3 of them to hook up and u can keep your stock harness
sell your ls head and ecu and u get sum money back from that towards your swap

Re: HELP DECIDING WHAT ROUTE TO GO WITH ENGINE
The type r is over rated. Get a B18C1 and throw some mild cams like Type Rs or a set of Stage 1s, a little higher compression pistons, a decent header, maybe get a mild port job, and you'll have something better than the ITR for less.
High compression will wear out rings faster. Higher lift cams wear out valvetrain faster. But, to make more power you need either boost or more aggressive cams and to take advantage of them, you need higher compression. 11:1 is sufficient for mild cams.
Theres a lot that goes into picking out pistons, cams, a header, an intake. It all comes down to what you're doing and where you need the power. That's the fun part...

^^ i agree, a type r motor is a really nice motor to have but for the price you'd be spending its not worth it. if you can find one cheap by all means get it but untill now B18c1's put down comparable numbers at half the price.

Re: HELP DECIDING WHAT ROUTE TO GO WITH ENGINE
For sure, but it didn't sound like this guy wanted to rip the motor apart. And honestly if you can pick up a complete 98 spec R for ~$3000 I'd say go for it. A built GSR is a great motor though, but they are suggesting over $1000 in internals plus the time it takes to do the work. I could go either way.
