help! civic has a weird oil burning smell.
So i went to check out this civic si today because i may be purchasing it.
the mods are as follows:
This is my 1999 civic si FIRST $5500 GETS HER!
only 10,000 miles on build
b18 block honed refurbed: NEW b18rods(shot pinned), NEW b18pistons, arp bearings, gsr head studs
b16head refurbed(new seals and a good cleaning): oem head(cams, valves, springs, all oem)
jackson racing supercharger 6lb boost
RC 440cc high imped.
hondata intake gasket
new gsr water pump an oil pump
walbro 255fuel pump
Grip Force stage 2clutch
Grip Force 9lb flywheel
aem custom intake
dc header
tanabe catback exaust...no cat!! just a test pipe.
eibock springs
skunk 2 camber kit
b&m short shift
auto meter boost guage
passpost bushing motor mounts
p30 ecu on hondata s200 w/boost (jumper harness installed)
5w-30 non-synthic
regular driving, everything is normal, but when he punches the gas, u can smell a very strong oil burning smell inside of the car. he says it's to be expected because of the mod's to the engine.
is this true??
another question is, he has the stage 2 clutch and when i was driving it, it felt like it was slipping but the rpms didn't really respond similarly. is that just a stage 2 feel?

Re: help! civic has a weird oil burning smell.
i dunno i didn't look.
all i wanna know is if it's normal for some cars when the motor is frankenstein'd and supercharged and modded.

if the car is built properly and in good health it should not be burning oil. if it is, something is wrong. if you want to have a better idea what shape the engine is in then have a compression test and a cylinder leakdown test performed.

Changed the testpipe recently? I had something similar. A while ago I changed my decat back to original cat and used some isolation spray (wd-40) between the cat and exhaust pipe, everytime I drove the car and punched it, it smelled like something was burning. After a month it was gone...

Re: help! civic has a weird oil burning smell.
it actually may be the test pipe but idk. it doesnt smell like burning oil, that's just what he said it was.
and it doesn't smell at all unless the car is really pushed.
@ D16SiHatch how do i do the compression test?

Seems like the same problem I had. I just waited and punched the gas a bit more and it fixed itself But with a list of engine mods like that you can never be sure...

Re: help! civic has a weird oil burning smell.
it's weird tho cause u can really get a good wiff of it from the inside of the car, but it doesn't linger it just goes away after a few seconds like when the car is running normal.
i know nobody can tell me what the problem is just from what i'm saying, but i wanna try to narrow it down.

Re: help! civic has a weird oil burning smell.
maybe you should not buy a supercharged tuner if you dont even know how to do a comp test. No offense bud... but you might getting in a little over your head. Also you say it was burring oil when he punched it and you didnt even look to see if it was burning out the back.... thats A must when buying a honda is to see if it burns when In the higher rpms cause alot of them have worn rings, might be the case for yours.
How old are you?
Im really not trying to insult you here dude but the last thing a young kid with no auto sence needs in a charged tuner.
Oh god and I missed the stage 2 comment..... no man, clutchs should not slip.
It sounds like this guy is tyring to sell you his bagged out ride.
worn clutch and bad rings means he beat the **** out of that car and now he is trying to sell you his worn out ride.
comp test it.... I would punt money on that this this is trash.

Re: help! civic has a weird oil burning smell.
a test pipe will have a smell to it, ( as in burning gas) blue smoke means oil, its prolly running a little rich on the tune, and cause of the supercharger, but do a leak down test if you havent already and for 5500 thats a good deal, i have a 1998 civic ex for sale 7800, hmotors 2nd gen b16 full exhuast header back, underdrive pulleys on alt, ps, skunk2 shifter/****, 3inch chrome intake with Vstack, odb-2-to1 jumper harness and ecu, test pipe and high flow cat, 17 eneki rsv gold with alumnium lip, cars forest green, y21 tranny w/lsd custom subwoofers build into the sparetire well, with amps built in to each 1000watt memphis and memphis subs, sony rear speakers kenwood in the front, some crossovers , pioneer deck. tockio illumina struts w/coilovers camber kit its a sick car buy itfrom me

Re: help! civic has a weird oil burning smell.
i'm not a great mechanic so i don't know much of the tools used. i understand the basic principles of a compression test tho.
and i may verywell do that, and if i find blue smoke coming from the exhaust, what is that a sign of? bad rings?

Re: help! civic has a weird oil burning smell.
to do a compression test you need to either purchase or rent a compression tester. then pull all the spark plugs and insert the proper threaded fitting for the tester into one plug hole at a time. disable the ignition so it won't fire by unplugging the distributor. during each test crank the engine 5-7 times, or until the needle stabilizes. have someone hold the tb open.
for the b16a the nominal psi is 184. minimum service limit is 135 psi. there should be no more than 28 psi of variation between any given cylinder.

Re: help! civic has a weird oil burning smell.
A compression test will just tell you how well its sealing, it wont tell you where the leak is, that is why you need a leak down test done. That will tell you whether your intake or exhaust valves are leaking, your rings are bad. Also dont assume because you see blue smoke the rings are bad, it could be valve seals, or a leaking head gasket. If you want to test rings, you want to do a dry comp down test, then after you get your numbers, do a wet comp down, which involves putting a small amt of oil in each cyl as you test. If the numbers are very close between wet and dry, its not your rings.
