Help! Car won't start...
ok. This is really wierd and i dont know what is causing it. I have a 99 civic si. And if the car sits over night...or even for a few hours...i can put the key in and it starts right up. BUT, if i drive the car around...then say, stop for gas or to get food, when i get back in the car and try to start it...it doesn't start! it doesnt even crank! the only thing it does, is i can hear the fuel pump kick on and the fuel rail fill up. so i have to push start the car if i dont want to have to wait hours for it to start again!
anyone please give your advice.
and i dont think its a bad starter bc even a bad starter will still try to crank. bad ignitor will still try to crank... it does not crank at all!
btw, the car has msd 6al ignition w/ blaster 2 external coil, tuned on hondata s200...
someone help...i really am stumped on this one....

Re: Help! Car won't start...
Ummm, no it won't. Either the starter motor is bad and won't turn, or the starter solenoid isn't switching voltage to the starter motor, or the starter solenoid isn't getting voltage from the ignition switch in the start position, or somewhere is a broken ground point that is intermittent, or even a loose clamp on one or both of the battery cables.
But heat seems to trigger the problem, so I'd guess the solenoid is the problem.

Re: Help! Car won't start...
I bet it's the starter going bad. Next time it won't crank, tap on the starter with a hammer or whatever's handy. I had a Hatch do the same thing,..bad starter.

Re: Help! Car won't start...
right on. thnx everyone. haven't swapped the starter yet. going to do it tomorrow morning. hopefully it works! i just dont understand why it will work....and then after i've been driving, and everything is hot (im assuming this is the problem) it wont start... the only time it does not start is when the car has been driven, then turned off, sit for a few min, and then it wont start...so....idk..hopefully its the starter.

Re: Help! Car won't start...
More than likely just the starter. No crank but just one click? That's what my y7 did. Replaced the starter and worked just fine. Now My c1 is doing that. Sometimes it will crank other times I have to turn the key on off on off on off till it will finally crank over. Once it cranks everything is fine right? Either way its something in the charging/starting system. Shouldn't have anything to worry about. As said before just go to autozone and they'll check that **** out for you to be sure.

Re: Help! Car won't start...
I had that same problem with my honda however, even on hot days my car wouldn't start. Had to get the garden hose to cool my honda down before it would start. So before you go getting your hands dirty, replacing parts that probably don't need replaced. Take a look at this web site and read this article on troubleshooting your honda.

If this is not your situation at least you will be a bit more knowledgeable on honda.

Re: Help! Car won't start...
Sounds like an intermittently bad starter solenoid. You could verify by wiring the solenoid directly to the positive battery terminal when the engine won't crank. If the engine still won't crank and the solenoid doesn't click when the solenoid is directly wired to the battery, then the solenoid is surely bad.
The main relay has nothing to do with the starter and is not causing your problem.

Re: Help! Car won't start...
hhmmm...ok. so the solenoid is the part where the wire with the "female" connector goes onto the "male" pin coming out of the starter?? is that correct? so just run a wire from that to the pos battery terminal?

Re: Help! Car won't start...
Don't bother with the main relay. It has absolutely nothing to do with a no-crank condition. BTW, I had a GM some years ago that would not crank after long trips. It was the solenoid. (It's job is to connect the high current lead from the battery to the starter motor with a low current input signal from the ignition switch.)
