Help! Car randomly shuts off then starts right back up while driving
Ok, I was on the way home from school the other day and while driving down the road, my car shut off, engine, headunit, everything. Then instantly started right back up right after it died. It feels as if it stalls, shuts off, then starts back up instantly without me touching the key or anything.
Its pretty random when it does happen. Some days it will do it 4-5 times, and other days it won't do it at all. I have checked my grounds on my engine (trans, valve cover, thermostat). They are all tight. My battery terminals are tight as well. I have replaced the ignition coil, rotor button, distributor cap, plugs, and wires. I'm stumped as to what it could be. It seems like it would be eletrical due to it shutting the head unit and headlights off when it happens as well.
edit: This is in a 1996 Honda Civic EX 4 door. All stock other than an intake and fpr

Is there any way to test the ignition switch on the car? That way I'm not just throwing money away at parts that wont fix it

Testing may be tricky as the problem is intermittent. If the switch tests good, it could still be bad, so do the tests many times.

Roll into a puddle ? Lost your inner fender ? I had the same problem, the water was getting into my air filter, make sure your distributor is alright too. It can be a corroted gound from your ignition switch.

Re: Help! Car randomly shuts off then starts right back up while driving
thanks for the diagram! i'm going to test it on wednesday on my day off from work.
as for the water in the air filter, it hasn't rained at all in the past week here, so i can rule that one out. as for the distributor, i replaced the coil pack a few days ago, after it started the problems. i've got a spare dizzy laying around i'm probably gonna switch the coil pack into that too to see what happens, along with using some sand paper to make sure all my engine grounds have a good connection.
