how do you remove a broken valve cover bolt?
its still on the head.

anybody got any idea how to do it?
or anybody got experience with this?

that's kinda tricky, Is your valve cover off and the bolt sticking out a little bit or is the valve cover on and the bolt is still in it but blush with the cover?

If the cover is still on and the blot is flush, then you can use a bolt extraction tool. they sell them at sears, it's basically a couple of drill bits (various sizes) and it comes with some tap looking bits that are made for locking into the bolt as you turn it in to the left. Your suppose to drill the center of the broken bolt and use the matching extraction bit to remove the bolt. Use a magnet to pick up any shavings b4 you take the cover off, if though.

if the cover is off and the screw it down there were shavings can get into you valve area then I wouldn't do it. If you can get a set of vise grips on the tip of it you could try and unscrewing it that way.

haha me and a buddy has this exact problem on his d16y8. It took like 45 min or so, but we finally got it out. Heres what we did..

First, we took a flat head, then we took a hammer (or rubber mallet if you have it). Then you line up the flat head in the middle of the broken bolt, and hit it hard enough, but not too hard, to make a small "lip" in the bolt. Once you have a fair sized "lip" or divet in the bolt, you can twist it out, but it is pretty tricky. It takes a while, but the better sized lip, the easier im sure. Also, you may want to use a nice drop or two of some bolt loosener stuff, but we didn't have it, so it got tricky. But eventually, it will come out enough to be over the hole where you can either continue to unscrew it, otherwise use a needle nosed pliers to get at it. Just try all sorts of things, and eventually you will get it. Otherwise, you may be able to use a really strong magnet to try and twist it, but i doubt that'd work unless it was a pretty strong magnet! let me know if you get it out. ima try that right now. if anything ill use a drill and a really thin drill bit. and try not to have any shavings all over the place.

damn, sorry dude. It worked for us. i hope ya get it out, and be careful for the metal shavings!

try an easy out, you can pick them up at a hardware store. First take a normal drill bit of the appropriate size then take your easy out to it. It turns left and it bites into the broken off bolt and turns it to the left, unscrewing it.

i did this on my y8. Those bolts were pretty weak, i was just hand tightening but anyway. I got an easy out, and it was really easy..took like 5 mins and it was out. IMO-best way to go

yo koji!!! this is good. heres my .02 screw one nut onto the bolt. then screw another onto the bolt snug against the other nut. use an open ended wrench on the lower nut and unscrew. the friction will cause both nuts to not spin. if they spin add another nut and some locktite to secure it the the bolt.

if that does not work. weld or glue or soder the nut to the bolt and unscrew it that way.

o yea. if the nuts turn off the bolt just put them on, then hammer the head of the bolt so it makes a mushroom so the nuts will not back off the bolt.

can you soder metal? welding might [freak] the head up cause that screw is very small, you would have to be very careful, umm I dont know about the glue, lol

im not sure if you can soder that metal but that was an alternate option anyway. the two or three nuts should work but an easy out is like it says, an easy out. they work

haha. everything will be tried tomorrow, dont care, whatever it takes to get that out!!

mini me swap almost done, just the timing belt and water pump needs to be replaced! but crank pulley is a bizznat*h to remove!! still havent done that!! theres nowhere to put a crankshaft pulley holder. cause its all rounded not the usual hexagon thing. anybody did it some other way?
