Help, auto tranny dying!
I have a 2000 Civic EX w/ an automatic transmission and about 140k on the clock. Recently, the car started making an extremely loud "sandpaper" rubbing noise whenever I tried to accelerate. It gets louder in the upper rpm ranges also. It is now extremely down on power, and it hesitates to upshift or downshift, to the point that it is no longer driveable.
I took it to a mechanic, and he wanted to charge $1600 for a transmission rebuild, clearly that's not an option for me.
I tried changing the transmission fluid and adding Lucas transmission additive, but it did nothing for the problem.
Any idea what the problem could be? My plan is to source a used auto tranny locally to swap in, but I'm curious if there is an easier option. Thanks for the input.

He didn't drive it. I described the noises as I did in the 1st post, and he spoke about how Honda's auto transmissions are weak from that time, and I need a new one. I feel like he was just trying to take me for my $$.

auto tranny atart giving problem around 120k, they start on the automatics clutch, they start given away part of it that is what cause the low power laud sound and the car dont run like it has to, my opinion buy one m/t one 350$, pedals with clutch master cylinder and line 100$ clutch 100$ shifter and mount 60$ and computer 50$, and you make a good swap just for around 660$ easier cheap and better good luck with that

I have only seen a handful of transmission of that vintage civic fail.
I am not going to say your transmission is fine. But, I am going to recommend having a professional diagnose your vehicle before spending any money, unless you are absolutely sure it needs a transmission.
