Help. 240sx question but its general...
Riding in my girlfriends car tonight. Hear a rattling sound. Drive on for a minute. Car dies. Get out and look under the car. One of the bolts came loose on the alternator and it slid down. The belt was hanging. On 240s This belt goes around the alternator pulley and also drives the main cooling fan. I believe this was only off for 5 minutes or so and the temp gauge didnt go up. What specific damage should i be worried about?
thanks in advance,
brian

probably none. At least for a while. Get it home if it isn't too far away and start workin on it in the day time when you can see. believe it or not you can go a while before you kill anything. And besides, you will run out of power in the battery before overheating. Because the belt is off the alternator it battery isnt charging and you will go dead soon enough. Good luck...no damage yet.

had my mechanical fan off my 96 240 for about 6 months now, no adverse effects. i don't drive it real hard and i keep an eye on the temps via techtom. i'm putting an electric in when i swap motors but i've been rollin it without anything for awhile.

WELL...............
I appreciate everyones help on this. Fixed the alternator problem. The nut on the backside of the bottom alternator bolt had come loose. No big deal....
THEN!...
We go to turn it over. Dead battery. No problem. Hook up the battery box. Wait a minute. Go to turn it over and it bogs pretty bad. Wait a few more minutes. Feels like its flooded so we keep it going. FINALLLLLY turns over. Well im standing near the front and see smoke/steam coming from under the car near the muffler. Walk to the back and guess what... A BIG puddle of coolant. Blown head gasket. Seems that filling up the radiator on a daily basis isnt enough when your waiting on a new radiator to come in on order.
Shes going to sell the car and possibly buy a friends 97 GSR. Welcome to the honda club baby. I love you!
