Default Headlights go out.

A couple nights ago I was driving with my headlights on and all of a sudden, they went out. The dash lights went out to. Kinda like someone turned the headlights off by the switch. And wouldnt just come back on, i had to wait a few minutes.
Obviously this is a shortage, right? How do i find out where its short is it?

Its a 97 honda civic ex.

well if a fuse didn't blow which i am assuming it didn't since they came back on it is prly not a short. It is most likely a bad ground somewhere go through and check all your grounds.

also, check your headlight harness. mainly the black plastic piece that the wiring goes to and that plugs into the headlight bulbs. sometimes those will melt causing bad contact surface. easy junkyard fix, but it's annoying.

Well, they went out so i pulled over and shut the switch off, then like 2 minutes later tried it and it came back on.

like the other guy said, check the wires for the lights themselves. mine payed with me like this when they melted. i had to pop the hood and wiggle them everytime till i rewired em...

i have the same problem too, my tail lights work, my gauge cluster lights up, and my corner blinker lights turn on when i turn my lights on.

are these the same symptoms of a melted wire harness?

First, this isn't a ground issue. The headlights have separate grounds.
Next, have you tried to jiggle the wires at the bulb, my old civic had wiring issues and I had to smack the wires on one side as a temporary fix.
Next, a question. Do your taillights (not brake lights) come on with the headlights as they should?

^^it could be a ground issue theres ground on the headlight harness that could make the lights flicker on and off if they arent bolted down tightly..it could be loose wires... its most likely not a fuse if they came right back on after a couple of minutes
