Icon2 Headgasket blew chip on head

The headgasket blew the other night on my ladies car so I took it apart and I find this chunk missing off the head by the water jacket can I reuse the head if I get it resufaced. The headgasket blew on the opposite side of the chip

i have never seen damage that far away from the combustion chamber from a blown head gasket

i would advise you get the block checked for warpage, it may need to get resurfaced or replaced if its out of spec

but honestly since the area clamping on the blast ring area isnt touch, resurfacing the head seems like it would work

Why are those 2 valves open?

They're open because the camshaft is still attached to the head and pressing down on the valves.

Hey, I hate to sound like a salesman, but I've got a used cylinder head for a D16Y7 for sale in the Marketplace here.
Probably needs to be checked for warpage, but it should be good.

*shot by everyone*

Good luck!

Nice! So is this what happens when you do not change your radiator fluid and allow it to corrode your cylinder head?

You could try grinding out the corroded metal and plugging the hole in the Aluminum with Steel Epoxy, and then using a stone to flatten the surface. Think of yourself as a dentist. This may not be a good idea, but it may work. I've never tried it. See what your machinist says about the idea and definitely have the head resurfaced

Hmm, by looking at the pic I'd say no. But the only way to be sure is to take a micrometer and gauge the depth of the corrosion.

The machine shop will take off at least .001" depending on how warped the cylinder head is. The corrosion looks pretty deep.

On the intake side of the head you will see a tab on each corner. Inside the tab is a little square. That's your limit on how much you can machine off. If the machine shop hits the square the head is ruined.

I wouldnt fill that with a steel epoxy considering that the epoxy and aluminum have different temp limits, just ask your machine shop before you do anything

I wouldn't put any money into that head. Looks like a D-series head, dime a dozen,
buy another one.

^^^ this, hell, i have a Y7 head sitting in my garage that i'll never use, just need to have it stripped down/cleaned/put back together and it would be cheaper than restoring that head...even comes with an intake manifold

Take it to a machine shop to see if they can fill it and resurface, price it to see if it worth it.

not if you want a useable head.

yeah so now he has more money into it than the entire running engine is worth.

OP, i wouldn't even worry about it. the gasket doesn't seal there.. check and see of the head is still flat, just leave that ****, slap a gasket on it and roll. pretty sure that a little divot in a cooling jacket hasn't compromised this high-revving high-horsepower engine's operating potential. but if the machine shop is going to charge more than $70 bucks to check it and resurface your head, just go to a junkyard and get another one.

Buy another head and call it a day, if you fill it in and it leaks then you still have to put money into it, get another head and save yourself the time and money

What engine? If it's a D-series, especially a D15B7/D15B8 don't waste your time with it. They tend to just keep blowing headgaskets every 6 months to a year after.
