Head Work- Port and Pollishing
Has anyone with a SOHC Civic ever had headwork done? I have an 00' EX and it has all modified I/E/H and all that, and the speed shop told me to do some "head work" involving porting and polishing the head, and intake manifold; along with a "competition" valve angle cut. What is all of that? What are the pro's and cons? and they want 1,200-2,000 dollars depending on god knows what. They also said i can get up to 20 extra horses.... how does that sound? Are they B.S.'ing or is this really something i sould look into...?? How does all that sound? Anything will help!
Thanks!
Thanks!

no they aren't b.s.ing u, if the shop knows what they are doing and port the head & intake manifold than i would think u could make an xtra 20hp.

I doubt you'll get +20whp from headwork on stock internals. And that's a helluva lot of money for headwork. Contact Portflow, they can do it for much cheaper. If you got a cam (crane, zex), higher CR pistons, and some tuning, along with the headwork, than you can probably net more than 20whp. I've seen a dyno of a D16 (can't remember if it was z6 or y8) that made 15whp from DPR headwork on stock internals, but it wasn't 20+whp. If he had a cam and higher CR, the'd be past +20whp easy. See what their price includes, cuz that's pretty damn high! Maybe they throw in the cams and pistons too (prolly not tho). HTH.

Nobody really answered his orig. question - What is porting and polishing? Porting and polishing involves removing the intake manifold, and expanding the intake chambers. You could probably do it yourself with some research and a dremel...I've heard of many people doing that. After everything is opened up a bit more its polished, the point of doing all this is to allow more air into the engine, as well as better flowing (better efficiency = better gas milage, more power). Some Port and Polish jobs include headwork, such as cleaning and opening up the valve openings more. Maybe they are going to install larger valves for you and that's where all the cost is. However, if I remember correctly you said you have a d16z6. This engine already has VERY good airflow, so in my opinion the money could be better spent somewhere else. If you really are going to spend 2k, get a greddy turbo kit (I've seen them for 92-95 civics for about 1650) and only run 7psi. You will be fine with stock bottom end, and you'll be looking at a 40+ hp gain, with more potential if you biuld the inside up. Just a thougt. Hope I answered your question.
