Default head stud

when using head studs, do you go off of the block or head?

Example; b18c1 block with b16a head do you use b18c1 head stud because it's a b18c1 block, or b16a head stud because its a b16a head?

b16a block with p72 head; do you use b16a head stud because its a b16a block or gsr head stud because its got the gsr head?

I may be wrong, but I think you go off the head most of the time. There are some applications where the stud is made for that combo I think too though.
