Default Head-Gasket!!CRAP!!

Damn, after doing some research/searching on why my car over heats like a ****, it came down to a head-gasket leak
well, I just have a stocker D motor, and do have plans to dump it for a JDM, but money is tight.
So with that in mind, I asked around for prices and the bastard want 350-450 bones!!
so I decided to do the work myself, since I've done all the work on the car so far
So I got a Few question if ya dont mind???
1.does the intake man raally have to come off the head to be able to
remove the head??
2. Just bought the a honda head-gasket that mopped me of $90, the
multi-layered metal one, does this one self seals??
3.would it be cool if I reuse the Head-bolts I have IF they are in good
shape/size?? also, is there a special way of screwing them on besides
the order u must follow when installing the bolts???
4. does the distributor has to be taken off in order to off-the-head??

well, think I got every thing
I'll see if I can get pics of this stunt of mine for all to enjoy lol, and I say stunt since this is the worst thing I've done on the car. should be fun!
please any tips would great to have.

dude.. sounds like you should let someone who knows what they're doing work on your car.

and if you do end up doing it yourself, get a Helm's manual and follow step by step.

You can re-use the headbolts, just besure to torque them down properly, in the correct sequence, center-out. You'll need to remove the dizzy along with the camshaft to get to the headbolts. the IM & EM can stay, good luck.

well where to start on a sohc you do not need to remove the cam shaft when i did my head gasket i did have to remove the exhaust and intake manofold they both get in the way of physically taking the head off you might be able to keep the intake manifold on if you remove the mount that holds it to the block from the back but that's a big if

You don't have to take off the intake mani BUT you do have to take off the brace that "holds" it to the motor....its underneath the intake mani...have to do it from underneath the car...pita but it shouldn't take too long with the right tools.

starting to feel a lot better, its funny though, there are alot of racers/ricers that claim to crap on people when it comes to cars, but steer clear when it comes to doing the head
saying I can't do it with out a mechanic, looking foward for the day to prove em wrong(grabs the nearest chair, climbs on top and pops a cheast)

If you're gonna leave the intake mani on. Don't forget to unplug the various electrical connectors and hoses. Line up cylinder one at TDC before you take off the belt. And make a note of how the cam gear is positioned in relation to crank shaft pulley. Good luck

The hardest part about this in my opinion is dealing with the timing belt... I could not get my tensioner pully to break loose and never could get the timing right, i had to have a mechanic fix the timing belt in the end oh well 180 was better than 400 for the whole job...

i just did a headgasket change not too long ago, so here's my advice.

i removed my intake manifold mainly cuz it said so in the helms. if u can remove it with the manifold still on there, then do that. if u do remove the manifold from the head, you'll have to get a new gasket for that because that thing is paper, and most likely it stuck to one side. and it caused me problems when reassembling because it didnt seal up correctly.

u dont need to remove the camshaft when removing the SOHC head. i didnt, and most likely u wont have to either. are u planning any major mods with that motor? if so, go grab some aftermarket headstuds and replace those crappy headbolts.

make sure u have good tools.

and make sure you have a helms. if u need a copy, ill point u to the direction where u can get one online

the only mods Im planning is maybe doing a mini-me, but then again, I'll just get the whole motor with trani...just tight on the green, till then, gonna be abusing the D mo. thx all, every thing just points to timing and just simply taking your time
