Having trouble putting axles back in. Any tricks?
Ok, I was trying to wrap up installing my new ACT clutch last night when I encountered some problems that I've never had before. I cannot get the out portion of the axle to fully seat into the hub. The splines match up, but it won't go in all the way.
None of the splines appear to be damaged, and although I've never done axles on this particular car (94 Civic EX) I've never had trouble on any other honda or acura.
Do you guys know of any tricks or things you've done to make them seat properly?
And here is an added bonus picture of my goofy *** at CES so that twice as many people will look at this thread!

Put the axle into the tranny as far as you can, put the other end of the axle through the wheel hub. Thread the crown nut back on the lower arm. Then use a gear puller around the hub to push the axle back through the hub (pushing the axle toward the tranny). The axle shouldn't go all the way back through the hub before the tranny side snaps back into place.

use a big dab of grease and get that sucker as far in as possible... if you have some thread sticking out, put the axle nut back on and tighten. that's what i did, and it worked like a charm

Re: (Turbo E 604)
Hmm, I don't have a rubber mallet (I need to get one) and I broke my gear puller earlier in the process, so it looks like I'll be making a trip to Harbor Freight to pick up some cheap *** tools!!!....oh and some grease!
Any other ideas?

Make sure the snap ring on the axle shaft isn't chewed-up or deformed. Don't apply any lubercants. Just make sure the axel is lined up in the tranny according to the thread mesh and use a brass hammer and hit the outside end of the axel(where the 1 1/4 nut is placed) and it will slide into its place. The need of the hammer is to make sure the snap ring slides into the collar groove inside the tranny.
When I first install my swap and was putting the axels into place I never smacked the ends of the axel and make sure it snaped into place, therefore when I went out on my first test drive the passange side axel shot out of the tranny. lol I was lucky the gear mesh wasn't stripped.
hope this helps

Re: (93Civic_hb)
My only problem is that the axles are going just fine into the tranny and the snap ring even locks into place. It's where the axles join with hub.
I just went and bought a mallet ($2.99 at Harbor Freight, I love that place) so I think I'll just try strong armin' it tonight.
Any other tips though are welcome.

if you can get the axle far enough in...
use the axle nut as if you are threading it normally, but flip it backwards. the top portion sticks in further than you would think.
use pliers to turn the nut. this will pull the axle all the way through.

At least you got them in, I was going to sugguest the splines might be messed up and you'd have the regrind them. Haven't heard of axles being that hard to put in though. Takes me 10 minutes tops by myself to put in 1 side.

Re: (Echelon)
hit the splines with alittle anti-seize, and brush the inside of the hub with a steel brush to get all the funk and rust out. shove that mo fo in..
