Having some trouble with my rear brakes.
 

Ran into an issue while replacing my rear brake pads. One side was fine, but the other is giving me problems. When I install the new pads, the caliper doesn't fit over them. The piston is as far in as it could go.

A friend of mine had the same issue. Here is my question: Is the part circled in the red supposed to move in and out freely? Mine are stuck. I have tried banging them with a hammer in and out, but they just won't go anywhere. I'm not sure if these are supposed to be stationary. I was told they are supposed to move in and out freely.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

thats your problem, they are supposed to move freely. they are called sliding pins, hence the term, sliding calipers. get them out somehow, maybe with a slide hammer or something? i dunno, then lube them up really good, or replace them with new sliders.

did you allign the x slots on the rear caliper, with a dimple on the pad. I never head rear disks on the civic but from other cars I know that you are supposed to align them if a brake pad got a dimple.

X slots? I didn't notice any dimples in the pads. Any idea how I can get the "sliding pins" out? I've tried banging them in/out with a hammer quite a few times, but they didn't move at all. I'm assuming they need to move inward so that the caliper can fit on. It fits fine with the old pads.

how did you move the piston in the caliper?

good stuff https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif try lining up the little dowel on the pad wit the slot on the piston, but if your pins arent sliding freely id take care of that first. you can either use some vice-grips clamp em on and try twistin and pullin or take a flat punch put it on the edge of the pin and hammer that sucker out https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

I'll give that another try. I was trying that today but that sucker was FROZEN on there. Would anyone advise against heating it up? I'm gonna heat up a few other bolts back there (also did suspension at the same time, and every bolt on this side was stuck http://images.honda-tech.com/set1//smile/emcrook.gif ) but there are little rubber boots on these.
