Is having HIDs on a 2000 Civic Legal????

hey i just bought a set of klight 55w hids with 6000k. its super bright and my friend was telling me that cops can give me a ticket for it because cars that dont originally come with HIDs cannot have hids through aftermarket. i have a 00 em1. is this true? thanks!!

Re: Is having HIDs on a 2000 Civic Legal????

correct. however, you can purchase DOT legal aftermarket housing, to hold the HID lights. this would make it legal. but they are projectors.

Whoa, never knew it was ticketable.. >_<

Re: Is having HIDs on a 2000 Civic Legal????

bump.

yea definitely ticketable. aftermarket HIDs are pretty much illegal in the wrong housing. I'm not going to hate on the aftermarket HIDs. I have a set in mine, but the set i have the bulbs dimmed after 6 months. After they die im either going to retrofit or get silverstars. In california, they have rules for everything yet I see people blocking their license plates with dirty protectors, and trucks having headlights way brighter than HIDs.. go figure.

would it help if i went with a lower wattage, lets say 35 watt instead of 55watt or do you guys think my chances of being ticketted would probably be the same? thanks

Re: Is having HIDs on a 2000 Civic Legal????

Why not just retrofit a set so that way it is actually helping your visibility (and others) rather than hurting it? HID kits are almost always pieces of shit with all kinds of glare for you and everyone around you. As for your actual question though...I believe the ticket will just be a fix-it ticket. So in the event that you get a ticket, just put your stocks back in and get it signed off.

Yeah, no kidding man. That is so ridiculous. Every truck driving around blinds the shit out of me. And this isn't just in my lowered Honda..other stock vehicles as well. They should really crack down on that, we shouldn't be blinded constantly from every truck out there.

get some 10K HIDs and blind the **** out of every cop so they cant even see what car your driving
HIDs FTW!

Re: Is having HIDs on a 2000 Civic Legal????

I have 35W 6000k HID's on my civic for about 2 years now and I've never been pulled over. I think the major problem are people driving around in pickup trucks with HID's and people running 8000K+. If I were you I would have gotten the 35w but I think the 55w should be fine. My friend with an altima also has some 55w 6000k HIDs and he has never been pulled over either. Location probably varies too though, I live in houston.

Re: Is having HIDs on a 2000 Civic Legal????

yep, it's illegal. cops where you live may or may not care. where i live they don't seem to care as long as they are adjusted properly (even though they'll still have some glare).

I have 8000k HIDs and I don't really care if I'm giving off a little more glare than normal. Being so low to the ground, I catch glare from just about anyone. I have to deal with it all the time and I don't find myself in a dangerous situation from a little bit of glare, so why should it bother other people so much? I think more than anything, glare is just annoying. I get annoyed by it all the time from other drivers, they can have a little bit of their own medicine.

It all depends on the cop though they can pull you over if they want to be an *** about it.

True that on the cops can just be an a** but anyways i got 10000k lol and i adjusted them right and they are BRIGHT lol and im lowered and Mercedes and lexus flash the brights at me and then i just get behind them and blind them they plip the mirror back to night i move over in the lane and make my lights shine in the mirror lol just because i like to be a dick ever once in a blue moon.but as far as the truck thing that needs to be taken car of i just put 5% tint on my hatch back windows and 35%on the front got tired of being blinded/............................

I am getting the 96-98 JDM black housing headlights and i will most likely retro-fit some projectors into them to make my HIDS all the better

Okay, that's just stupid.

Also, i've never had anyone shine their brights at me and i've asked people I know if they're too bright for them and they say no. You most likely do not have them properly adjusted.

Re: Is having HIDs on a 2000 Civic Legal????

it all depends on the cop I think. Up here in Washington I had a 8k kit on the 00 em1 and the cops pulled me over for it and took a piece of paper and held it in front of my lights they said if it shined any other color then white then it would be a ticket (lucky I have high beam of normal bulbs and can hit the highs to make the hids shut off and the normals come on) They didn't catch me. lol

i just leveled mine to center on the levler some ppl think there too bright but thats like 1 in ever like 300 ppl i pass but i will get the jdm black headlights and retro fit projectors to concentrate the beam and make it look a lot cleaner too

Re: Is having HIDs on a 2000 Civic Legal????

I say that 6000k HIDs are not illegal. I have seen plenty of Civics in the Bay Area running 6000k on stock housings. I've seen 8000k too but cops usually pull 8000k over. I haven't seen 55w ones yet tho.

Oh, well then that changes everything.

Could you also change the law to include 8000k?

you do know that 10,000k are actually alot duller than the OPs 6000k right? the higher the number the more color but your lumens go way down. and to the OP yes they are illegal in a car that wasnt meant for them, theyre so common now that most cops ignore them but they can ticket you if they want.

Re: Is having HIDs on a 2000 Civic Legal????

In Nevada they're only illegal in 10,000k because they're blue and replicate emergency vehicle colors, but if your not a prick they'll let cut you a break. I have 10,000k get pulled over every couple months for that sole reason and they tell me to change them thats it. Avoid them if you have other llegal issues as it's just a reason to pull you over and run your name.

HIDs FTW!

You'd blind everyone else also. 10000K HIDs are some of the dimmest. 4300k has the most light output.

Aftermarket HIDs in civic housings usually look like shit. I can see better with stock headlights than my friend can with HIDs. The HIDs just shine EVERYWHERE instead of actually hitting the road.

The difference between a car with HID spec. housings and regular housings with HID PNP kits is staggering. I have a S2000. You can almost see THROUGH the stuff in front of you lol. Plus, they don't blind anyone.

Anything before the 06 civic housings suck ass. Even with halogens, the light escapes everywhere. With HIDs....they REALLY suck. I have an EM1 also..and I've had more than a few other civics of different generations....so I'm speaking on experience.

Re: Is having HIDs on a 2000 Civic Legal????

I have been in several cars that have HID's but if you get the proper ones which are 4300 to no more than 6000k with the bi level so you have low and high beam. Most will come with a DOT legal sticker if there the better ones like Xenon but those are Big dollars lol
