it all started with a spirited and vtec-filled drive home down a familiar set of twisty roads, but sideways in a sharp turn and two hits on a guardrail later, i have an estimate for 3200 dollars damage written down the passenger side of my hatch.

i have a $3200 estimate (the most expensive shop in town) to turn in to ins., and hopefully state farm will write out the check directly to me. can anyone verify if they will write it directly to me???

another shop said they'd fix/replace my front quarter panel, headlight, fr. bumper cover, door shell, and repair the rear quarter panel PLUS..... change the color to white ( hopefully CW) from midori green,
FOR $2200 and write the estimate for the same 3200.
hmmmmmmmm....................can you say clutch and flywheel???


also, a second party offered to paint (PPG certified guy) the necessary pieces and do the entire un/re/installation for about $550 if i supply all the parts and paint.

NOW, an expensive body shop would use all oem replacement stuff. the other two guys would use aftermarket, and whatever else i came up with (aftermarket bumper, fender, and door) for the paint and labor guy.

do i go through with it, even though the paint might not be the best job in town, or do i eat the deductible and fix the car back to pre-wreck condition???

2200 guy: paint change and maybe enough left over for a good clutch and MAYBE scrape up enough for flywheel?
550 guy: i'm thinking no more than 500 more for parts and paint. that leaves me with about 1500 to play around with.

frame is good, the impact was light enough to be absorbed by the panels. which deal is the good one???

I would do as much work as possible yourself and save some money towards the aftermarket goodies. That's what I did when I hit a deer, destroyed the whole front end, the insurance wrote it in my name. The only work I needed done was the paint. With the extra money I got a bodykit and carbon fiber hood. So I would pull out your tools and do some unbolting and see where you get. Plus a lightened flywheel and clutch is a great set up. I have a comptech flywheel and an ACT clutch, it freed up so much power, great upgrade.

hopefully they dont consider that estimate to be an amount worth totaling the car, of course it could be bought back but salvaged.....

that was a thought, since i only paid about 4500 for the car. i still owe maybe 1500-2000

If you still owe money on the car to a loan you will not be able to get a check made out to you. They will want to pay the shop directly. A good hookup will inflate the costs of the repair for you, hide it in there, and give you back some money after the repairs. Example: place quotes state farm $3200 and bills them taht. They only spend $2000 in parts and labor. You give the guy $200 to pocket and you walk away with a grand.

IF you have already paid the car off, or borrowed it from someone off the books like your parents, you get a check made out to whoever the insurance holder is. This could be you or your parents, if you are on your parents policy it is made out to them even though you were the driver.

i got a quote today on CW paint. it sounds better and better any way i slice it! i guess i hope that the insurance company won't consider the car totalled(that doesn't look correct..).

the rare bird is breeding in my hometown. there are now three of them around. one of whom is owned by my friend. CW is pretty rare on a hatch too. it would've had to be DONE to the car in most every case, minus the handful of ctr's imported.

i might have been there....but i don't go over the double yellow lines cause I KNOW THEY ARE SLICKER THAN A PUPPIES PETER!!! then i don't go off road trying to over correct etc.....i drive within the limits of the road with my car on a public road....you were definately out of your limits......what tires did you have?? oh p700,,,,,,yeah those are great!!

you said you still owe about 2k on the car fix it and pay off part off your car. so you wont have to worry about paying it off and then you would have more money to save later to buy more new things for your car. then if anything needs to be fixed on your car you wouldnt have to worry about paying for your car at the same time.

the monthly payment never changes, but this is a chance to make a decent size purchase for almost nothing out of pocket.

i owed money on a car, got rear ended, i got the money to me for the damage, and money for the accident. I used farmers at the time.

i think i have heard that they are a little more leniant, the same scenario happened to my good friend, on a 2002. he owed like 20k+ and they wrote out a check directly to him. i think state farm is a little more cautious with their claims. i guess we will see in a couple days or so.
