Default Harmonic Balancer Broke Off - ARP Balancer Bolt Kit for d15b7?

I was driving down the road at night. Bang clunk! I couldn't figure out what fell out. I started driving again and realised my power steering was gone and my battery light was on. Today I dug in and found my Harmonic Balancer literally broke off and is gone. All I see is the gear the time belt goes around. And I can see it broke off going into where ever it goes. I did some youtubing, but I don't know what to do with how broken it is. Does anyone have any advice? My timing belt is looser. Do you think this did any real damage to my engine? Any advice is appreciated, I have been researching the last 15 or 20 so minutes. Thanks!

I am hazarding a guess that the end of the crank shaft is mangled.

The proper fix is to swap the crank shaft which is borderline bottom end motor rebuild.

It would likely be cheaper to swap in another used motor.

Of course that's assuming we are even talking a Honda here.

You didn't provide any car information what so ever.

You need to post year/make/model/trim and modifications on the car if you want accurate advise.

I'm assuming you have a cheapy D15B8 motor and so fixing the crank on that is more expensive than finding another D15B8 to throw into the car.

Post a bunch of clear pictures. Did you recently replace the timing belt?

Timing belt was replaced 25k ago. I have an extra d15b7 in my garage, it has something wrong with it I just haven't diagnosed it yet. I will take some pictures today or tomorrow and post them. It really sucks because my engine has 75k on it.

So I was talking with someone at work, (not an auto-shop, I work for Amazon) I showed him a lower quality pic I have. It turns out the crankshaft bolt broke off, and none of the bolt is sticking out, its all inside the crank, well the little gear the timing belt goes around. Good news on all of this though.. This is the perfect time to prepare my car for my Jackson Racing Supercharger!

Also, my timing belt is loose now. Luckily I have a new timing belt, an extra crank (oem), and my Jackson Racing Crank. I also have an extra engine in case I need any parts. Do you think it's possible the my belt got stretched in all of this? I'll check the tensioner to see if it's all the way tight. I am going to replace my belt anyways. I am actually somewhat thankful this happened as much as it sucks. It's an excuse to park her, get the work done I have been meaning to, and show her some TLC. I already did the headgasket, I got my lower seals for my spark plugs tube, I just have to get my rocker arm assembly out and replace it. I am doing the other seals and o-ring while I am in there. I took off my header so I can replace my oil pan gasket, pretty much just going through and sealing her all up, replacing stuff while I am already in there.

I did some researching in extracting this bolt. Some people said an extractor wouldn't pull it. I have a Dewalt 18v impact drive as well as an 18v drill. Do you think I would be able to drill something in, use an easy out and extract it? Some people stated it will break the extractor off. Some people said to weld a bolt or something on to back it out. The only issue is I don't have anything to weld it. Anyone have ideas? Thanks!

I got the bolt out!!! Without damaging any threads. I am extremely happy. After getting that out, I removed my intake manifold, alternator, and am now in route to installing my supercharger. Wish me luck!

Default ARP Balancer Bolt Kit for d15b7?

Does anyone know know if there is any ARP crankshaft bolt/harmonic balancer bolt that will fit the d15b7? The ARP 208-2501 is for b16/b18. Would that fit mine? Or does anyone have any suggestions for a supercharger application? Thanks!

The bolt is fairly big so the extractor will be larger and just might take the 300+ ft-lbs it will take to break free.

I would go to some place like lordco or snapon and spend top dollar on the extractor as then it will be a forged hardened steel piece instead of the lesser grade extractors that are easier on the pocket book.

The bolt is also a grade 8 steel bolt so you will need some good drill bits. On this front (mine was suspension bolts) I also bought high end bits from lordco and swapped out the dead ones each time to get my 3 bolts out of the rear lower control arms. Same bolt material as the crank bolt.

The bit was almost 20 bucks.

Worst case value you drill the walls thin enough, the bolt has next to nothing left to hold when the extractor bites in.

You can do it, but it's not going to be fun or easy.

Default Harmonic Balancer bolt broke while driving. Damages?

I was driving about 50 when I heard a loud clunk, when I checked it out it turns out the bolt holding my harmonic balancer broke. My pully left my vehicle and is a ditch somewhere. I managed to extract the bolt. Does anyone know if this may have caused damage to the crankshaft its self? Or is there a way to check without ripping into the engine?

Actually I went to lowes and got bits for hardened steel, it came out easy with a Dewalt 18v!

The D15B7 does not use a dampened crank pulley so can be run safely with a lightened non dampened crank pulley as the RPM probably never reaches the range that harmonic vibrations become an issue.

I don't believe you drove very long without your pulley so more than likely, your crank is fine.

You do need to get yourself another pulley and key though.

Once you have another pulley, and have set your mechanical timing, tensioned the timing belt, once you start warming the car for the ignition timing, if the motor is knocking, then you will know the crank bearings were damaged from it without ripping into the motor.

For anyone wondering, I found that B and D series 1.5 1.6 Balancer Bolts are compatible. Just ordered myself the ARP Kit
