The haggard $272 '97 HX quick resto
Hi guys, got bored and knocked out a quick project. I don't have any pictures of the day I towed it home, unfortunately, but it looks like the "before" paint pics, except it had a rusted out trunk on it and a massive hole in the roof from the previous owner removing and disposing of an aftermarket sunroof. Roof was dented in, as well. I bought the car for $375. It came on clean Rota GT3's with corded tires that I quickly unloaded for $325, bringing my total down to $50 for a haggard HX on steel wheels with bald tires.
When I bought the car, it had an eBay header on it with rust and holes galore. I grabbed an OEM one from the yard for $24, bringing my total to $74. Bodywork was next. Luckily, the quarters on this car were solid. However, there was a massive hole in the roof to deal with. In the interest of making this the cheapest Civic ever, I made a patch panel out of two dented fenders, and riveted that sucker up. Tons of Bondo and sandpaper later, I had spent $56, which brought me to $130.
Next up was interior. The thing was missing the headliner, misc plastic parts, had a random wheel with no airbag, no radio, and no ecu. A trip to the junkyard/my beat parts pile cost $25. Ecu I happened to have was a p2e, so to make it work with the engine I had to swap the throttle body with a spare y7 one I had, and bought a new gasket for $5. This brought me to a total of $160. A 3 wire IAC conversion, 4 wire o2 conversion, and headache later, it ran.
The car needed wheels, paint, and a trunk lid. I had a mildly fucked over trunk from a past project I swapped onto it. Next, I grabbed and redrilled a set of Miata daisy wheels with tires off CL for $50. Paint is a rattle job, with molding, skirts, grill painted satin black, with the body sprayed satin khaki. Total cost: $87, bringing my total to $247. I didn't like how the hood looked, so I bought a used bra for it for $10. New total: $257.
Threw an oil change at her ($15), and she runs great! Not looking horrible at all, and best of all, I am in it for $272 all said and done. As a bonus, it came with a full EM1 interior, and a brand new ACT stage 2 clutch kit and flywheel I installed. Not so much of a bonus are the shitty eBay sleeves. Pics:
Notice the tarp on the roof, lol. Bumpers off for towing.
Shitty roof patch job:
Dirty old bay:
Smoothin her out:
Guide coat/almost done:
Bumpers on/ ready for a sub $50 paint job:
Wheels on/ job almost done:
Not bad for 2 days work and under $300.

Roof scares me but otherwise awesome job. I can appreciate the work that went into the roof shape (specifically shaping), that's not as easy as you made it look.

I must say, I'm really envious of your body work knowledge.
Even if I had the space and tools, I have no idea of what I'm doing if I were to attack a body work project. Sadly, both my Hondas need the rear fender work done and I'm clueless to any of it.
Great job man. Looks pretty good for what it was.
