H22A Crankshaft Bolt
Okay my car has jumped timing and im trying replace the belt and fix the timing but to do so i have to take off the upper and lower casing for the belt. The upper peice came off fine the second not so much. To take it off you have to remove the crankshaft bolt and that has turned out to be a real job. First ive tryed a big breaker bar and couldnt budge it at all. So i ordered a peice to hold to crank will you try to break the bolt but that also didnt help at all. So i have heard that if i heat the bolt up cherry red and then try to break it off that more then likely it will break free but i was wondering if heating the bolt up that hot could affect anything else in the motor? Also i havent tryed an impact wrench but ive heard that they wont have the torque to break it. Any help will be useful thanks.

Heating it up and you trying to take off the bolt you will probably just break the head of the bolt off. a decent impact wrench and tank will take it off just fine, its what I ended up doing for my civic.

With the crack pulley tool, you'll still need a super long pipe off the end of your breaker bar to crack that sucker loose. Make sure you use 6-point 1/2" sockets too. I've snapped some 1/2" to 3/8" adapters trying to crack that thing loose. You'll feel like you're going to snap the bolt, but it should crack loose once you put enough force on it. I wouldn't heat the bolt up. Good luck.

Does anyone think that an impact would work? Ive tryed the breaker bar and just couldnt get enough torque on it. Im guessin though that heatin it up is not the best option but is it possible? Thanks

Yes i have used a large bar off the breaker bar but still couldnt get enough pull on it. How many foot pounds would the impact have to be, i dont have one and will need to get one if that is what will actually break it loose right now im really doubting the fact of it ever coming off. And also just to make sure the bolt comes off by breaking it clockwise. I havent been able to find good resource on it, but i have seen that on H and B motors the crank spins counter clockwise and to break it you go clockwise but i just want to make sure. Thanks for any help.

That's probably why you haven't been able to get it off. You're supposed to crack it loose going counterclockwise. The bolt holding the crank pulley to the crank is normal thread, not reverse.
As for the impact gun, you're putting way more torque into that bolt w/ a breaker bar and pipe. Most impact guns are rated up to 275-300 ft-lbs. If you got 3 feet of leverage and you're exerting 150 lbs of force, you're putting at least 450 ft-lbs of torque into the bolt.

The only impact I've seen that can break that loose every time is the snap on heavy duty impact. Has like 600+ ft lbs of reverse torque. Every other impact has failed unless the bolt was out recently. Your best off getting a very large breaker bar and go for it. If it doesn't go get something longer.
