Default Guys, I think I just blew my motor... Video inside

i was just finishing up adjusting my valves cause i thought i had lash. it was a slight knock coming from the right side of the motor, then after corrected the lash it started coming from the left. and then thissss

I set it at the following

exhaust 0.10
intake 0.08

after i put everything back together it started making a louder knock, this time at idle, i gave it a little throttle and it went away then came back.

then all of a sudden this happens.... can someone please tell me i didnt snap a rod or some crazy ****. i think i did some detremental **** but im hoping i just did the valves wrong...

i meant to say .008 as the spacing i put, the spacing it had was more like .012

it sounded so crazy, the motor was bucking and all. this motors entire bottom end was rebuilt including a new crankshaft. if that helps...

That would happen if they were too loose, not tight.

they were tight , i double checked everything twice and turned over the motor twice just to make sure i did everything right and then all hell broke loose.

im going to go to .20 and .25 which is what the stock position calls for.

a spun bearing is expensive right? might as well just drop a used motor in?

cause i thought i would gain some type of preformance aspect out of it. the guy had the same motor as me so i figured it would be fine. hes not the only person who posted those numbers but im guessing that my valves were fine and i just made whatever was wrong even worse

looks like there is some confusion. The .008 is in INCHES the .20 is MILLIMETERS.

Both are the same measurement.

So, OP when you say .008 are you meaning inches?

.008 inches = .20 mm
.010 inches = .25 mm

just make sure ur using the right gauge.

no im going by the feeler gauge that reads .008 and under it, it says .203mm

arent all feeler gauges the same? i dont see what i did wrong, maybe it wasnt the valves? im going to recheck everything tommorow and try to start her up. i never want to do another valve lash job again, turning that ******* crank was a PITA!! even with a swivel and long *** extension.

another quick question, was i suppose to make 1 full turn and then line up with the 3 lines and not the 2, to get the motor top center? i used the 3 lines and the gun sight looking thing to line it up.

Using a helms I would redo my valve adjustment and see if u still have the ticking like its going to blow up.But before you start it up and after the adjustment:
Does the crank turn by hand freely with not binding at all(turn crank counterclockwise) at any point? If it does bind then it would seem bearing problem.
I doubt you threw a rod since the noise IMO would be more thud like and would not last for long.
All the feeler gauges I have, have both inch and then mm on them although they could be hard to see. Good luck

If its not the valves, then I wouldnt drive it. Why try and drive it and have it blow up 3 miles down the road. save the engine and get it fixed

My d16 made this noise, it had spun a rod bearing! all i done was took the oil pan off and swapped out the bearings and it was fine after that, just dont drive or it keep turning the engine on or you damage the crankshaft or possibly snap a rod!

It is a very destinctive noise...doesnt sound anything like the valvetrain.

Op, in your other thread I said...If you dont know what your doing, you should just pay someone the $60 to do it for you. Someone that has done it before. Also said you can easily screw something up. Not saying your issue here with the spun bearing is related or you botched the lash job, just that these questions you have after the fact should have been known before you decided to futz with it.

Crank shouldn't be a pain in the *** to rotate...at all. Another sign of spun bearing.

Next time pull plugs out, rotates w/o compression. Just make sure plug tubes are clean of debris before pulling plugs out
Edit yes that's your rod knocking. Ouch that ones done for.

Wow, adjusted the valves and you guys say he spun a rod bearing? O.0

OP, where's the sound coming from? If you smacked a valve, obviously the sound would come from high. Spun rod would be low.
