If the rings are screwed, you can actually replace them (in most cases) without pulling the whole motor; you just pull the head and oil pan. But whether it's rings or valves, either way you're pulling the head. It's strange, when I had my EM1 my B16A2 lost a little compression in just the No.3, seemingly for no good reason (still ran great though).
Anyway, still run a leakdown test so you know the source of the problem before tearing it down.

Re: Gsr motor, one cylyinder no compression!
compression leakage test(leakdown) will nail down where the leak is. could be intake valve, could be exhaust valve, could be rings/piston, could be headgasket.
if he does the compression test and opens the radiator cap there will be bubbles if its the head gasket.
as far as price to fix.........thats a huge question mark. maybe $50, maybe $500, possibly more. impossible to say until you know more information

is there NO compression or is it just down at like 90 psi or something? 100 psi is minumum for combustion.
