Default Grinding noise when turning sharp

When I turn the steering wheel while moving to say make a sharp U-turn I start hearing a bad grinding. Im pretty sure its not from my wheels rubbing. Sound like its coming somewhere from the steering components. Also when the car is parked and off when i turn the wheel a little bit it will make a popping noise. It has no power steering. Just curious to what could be causing this and how soon I need to get it checked out.

-thanks

I have a very similar occurrence with my civic as well. It started happening when my mechanic reinserted my axle into the transmission. Could be a bad axle maybe?

bump for both of us :/

Jack up front of the car, turn your steering wheel to the direction that would make noise when you made the U-turn and spin the wheel manually. See if you can hear the sound then and try to locate where its come from.

when's the last time you replaced your cv joints??
If you replaced them after they got real bad and didnt replace the axle it could very well be the axle. If enough grease leaks out of the cv it screws up the axle pretty bad. eventually you could be hearing a popping noise everywhere you go.

I found out its a hell of alot easier to just get a pre built cv and axle set up and just throw that in. its a little more expensive but to me its worth it in the long run

I would definately check that first, if not then.. start tracing your steering components and look for any unusual cracks or bending everywere.

Good luck guys.. i hate dealing with axles
