Ive never replaced them and ive had the car for 3 years, the car has about 250K. But now i have a bigger problem, when i was driving home the grinding seemed louder and pushed on the brakes and something came lose and they went all the way to the floor. so now when you pull the emergency brake up they dont work either.

There are a lot of springs in there. At first, I was thinking that maybe the car sat for year or two and you were hearing rust grinding off. Then maybe the shoes were really old and the padding wore off. Your pedal shouldn't go all the way to the floor unless you have lost pressure and have a leak in the system somewhere. I would check the wheel cylinders first to see if one is leaking. It is the thing that receives the pressure from the system and pushes outward on the brake shoes located under the wheel hub. They do tend to leak over time. You can get "brake kit" from most auto parts stores that will have all of the springs and retainers you'll need to put it all back together. Personally, I would look into converting it to disc in the back. Disc brakes are a lot easier to deal with if you have the money for the conversion.

I bet the shoe came out of place and the wheel cylinder piston got pushed out and voila, no brakes.

i was just saying becasue more than likely if it is the brakes then your going to have to machine/turn your drums

Or depending on how toasted they are...just replace them. I've seen drums so far over minimum machining specs that the wheel cylinder would over-extend and leak. Do not just slap shoes in there and call it good. If you're not used to working with drum brakes they can be a little daunting at first and do require some specific tools to make your life easier. If you do it yourself, only take one side apart at a time so that if you forget what you're doing or where something goes you can refer to the side that's still together.

I second the idea that you blew a wheel cylinder...

Get it done soon, your just gonna keep pumping out brake fluid until you have none left and you dont stop at all.

I replaced the wheel cylinder it was leaking it came apart inside the drum, i replaced the shoes, and the drums also, i get everything back together and still no brakes. So i replaced the master cylinder and bleed all the brakes except the rear right because the new wheel cylinder has a bleed screw in it unlike the other side and i unscrew it and no fluid would come out so im guessing i have to switch it with another kind of bleed screw. And another thing i bleed the brakes, and come inside and look at the hanes manual and see that theres a certain order to go in which i didnt do do you think this could be another reason for no brake pressure?
