Default grinding noise?

a friend of mine just got a 96 civic ex with 190k miles on it. runs and drives good but its weird because everytime he shifts down into second or first while hes slowing down it has a weird grinding noise, its not the syncros because it keeps doing it at low speeds while in gear, then when he puts the clutch in it stops, theres no performance problems because of it, but its really annoying, thanks for the help guys
