Default Got a brake question...probably an easy one.

OK well not too many of my cars have ever had drums so I am very in-experienced with them. Well I went to change my rear shoes today (drums were ok) and despite being a cluster f*ck of springs, got everything back together fairly easily. However, the drum would NOT go back on. We had to pound it back on and once on, we could not get the wheel to turn freely. Obviously this is because there is more material on the new shoes, but what do I do now? Do I just drive it and let it where itself in? Or was there a step I should have performed before trying to get the drum back on?

wow..im having a brain fart and cant remmber what its called..but there is a part that has like little teeth..its almost like a gear...take a screw driver and push on the teeth to turn it one way to push the shoes out...and the other way to pull them in you should have a light drag when turning the drum not to much not to little.

Yeah I did turn the adjuster all the way in also, still did not free up much play though. Had to line the drum up perfectly and pound it on witha mallet.

That little wheel thingy is called the star wheel & its part of the self adjuster mech. turn that wheel in the direction that makes the pads move closer together until you can just get the drum on easily by hand. having to use the mallet just shouldnt be. does the wheel turn freely by hand now?

Honestly drum brakes are'nt to be messed with if you dont know what your doing because if the dont worked your fucked in the *** and have to dissassemble them again and also they can cause serious dammage to lines, drum, internals, etc...
but otherwise your going to have to take your drum off agian and loosen the adjusting star so the brakes arent being spread apart so much you also have to make sure your e-brake was completely disengaged before putting it on and no you shouldnt be driving it until it wears down you should be able to spin the drum and it should only rub enough so that you can here it

I turned the star completely in, shortening the adjuster as much as possible, and the drum was still stiff going on.

Unless you are doing something wrong we don't know about since we can't see your brakes, the drum should go in a little tight.

I had the same problem, you just have to move the shoes around a few times and just move it to the right spot.

it takes some time but it will usually fit no problem when you find the right spot.

Nope, Ebrake was not engaged. The star was turned completely in. I got the drums back on, I'm just concerned that something is going to catch fire due to the amount of rubbing.

I didn't get the drums turned, could that be the problem? The surface looked ok so I didn't think it needed it.....maybe thats where I went wrong.

You should always turn a drum they go out of round and will not work right also they tend to get a little lip on them and cause a problem putting them back together
