Re: good vtec kick in point? (4g4me)
Wherever is optimal....What's that? How do yuo find out where is the optimal point you ask?? When you are on the dyno and tuning your car.

Re: good vtec kick in point? (Apex i ITR)
you cant set it to low or you will begin to burn valves...im assuming that you understand how vtec works... So i dont need to go into that. Is your motor stock? what setup do you have??

Re: good vtec kick in point? (purek9hybrid)
im running a 96 jdm ITR motor b18c with s80 lsd tranny with 4.40 final and my ecu hasnt come in yet but it is and ist sht jun ecu with a 5700 vtec engagement point. i guess my question shold really be what is the optimal vtec kick in point for the 96 ITR motor? is tha better

stock... that's why they put it there...
If you want to know how to determine it for YOUR Engine and not just get a broad generalization....
You have to dyno the car in and out of vtec... the spot where the 2 power curves are CLOSEST is where you want it to kick in.
this way you get the most power out of non-vtec lobes and have the shorter drop in power during the change over. Too early and the vtec lobes aren't making more power... Too high and the non-vtec lobes are struggling to make ANY power much less more than they were a few hundred rpm ago.
If you look at the power curve of the non-vtec lobes they drop off FAST after they reach they're peak... so too high a vtec kick in will give you a slow spot in the middle of your gear as the motor strains to make it upto the vtec engagement point.
good luck.

I prefer the stock setting too. Once agin that is why it's there.
The only way I'd adjust it, is 200 rpms lower, for shifting purposes. A lot of times after shifting you will just drop out of VTEC engagement. This lil' difference can help keep you in VTEC after a shift.

I defenalty hear and feel it at 5,500. When i'm gunning it i also hear another valve open up at 7,500.

Do you have a GSR motor. A friend of mine with a JDM GSR motor said he swore he heard a louder noise in the higher RPM.

Because GSR motors have dual stage VTEC or something.

i-vtec is multi stage, but vtec is single stage (on/off). the tone in a GSR changes because of the plenum in the intake manifold. it changes the airflow at certain points to increase torque. as the airflow changes, the tone changes.

W3rd. Why is the vtec engagement point higher on a b16a sir2 then it is on a b16a2? I understand that honda set it up this way to offer the best power curve but since the only difference that Im aware of between the two engines are the pistons, is the higher comp what makes the vtec engagement point later or is it just the power output itself?
Im not sure if that makes sense, but if someone can help, Id appreciate it.

Re: good vtec kick in point? (Nine)
yea a gsr has 2nd butterflys in the maifold, thats one reason they have good bottom end, my vtec kicks in @ 4,800 i think that is a stock 94-95 GSR ecu, i think somewhere around there is best unless you have different cams
