I know this topic has been beaten to death, but i just need a quick answer.
I am thinking about getting a eg or a ek as a daily driver and swaping in a JDM b18 type R. My local shop quoted me $5200 after tax for the whole set up ( tranny, ecu etc etc). Is this set up reliable? I just want a daily driver with a bit of grunt. Not looking to race or modding it, maybe just I/H/E. Also, what are my other options?

you have tons of options, so many different things you can do, b16a,b16b.b18c gsr,b18c itr,b20,b18 etc

the b18c itr motor has power and still gets 30+ mpg
it takes premium fuel so be prepared to pay more for gas
you can find it cheaper, n1concepts.com is pretty good priced

Where are you located? Where are you/they getting the motor from and does it have a start up warranty? Are you keeping AC/PS if you currently have those features? And how much "grunt" are you looking for?

http://www.hmotorsonline.com <--- Check this for pricing. You could also look into getting a B18c (GSR), which will run you a little cheaper and still give you some "grunt". Just make sure you aren't paying more than $600 for installation at this shop you are going with.

But back to your question, if the motor has decent mileage (around 30-50k) and has been stored properly it should be plenty reliable. I would suggest replacing the timing belt, waterpump, plugs/wires/rotor/cap while the motor is out .

Also... a B18b1 with a B16 trans might give you some "grunt" also. All depends on what your definition is ya know?

I am getting the motor from a very reputable shop, it comes with full leak down, and compression test with start up warranty. As far as "grunt" goes ( heh) I am looking at around 200hp. I frequent the mountain highways alot in the summer and winter ( skiing and mtn biking), so i want a bit of power to get me up the hills. Also my budget is $12000cnd, including the car and the swap

I would find me a nice 99-00 EJ (hatch) or EJ8 (EX coupe) and swap a motor that is decently priced that has some torque behind it. Motors such as... B18b1 (LS), B20 (CRV), B18c/c1 (GSR), or the B18c/c5 (ITR). Depending on what you choose you are looking at anywhere from 127ftlbs-133ftlbs, though with the GSR or ITR you get anywhere from 170-200hp and m@d tyt3 vtak y0.

I have a 99 ex with a simple b18b with good clutch and lightened flywheel, sk2 mani and tb (flywheel was free). It gets me all over the mountains. Good cheap setup that will get you what you need and even if you feel like gettin down on it you have power to do so.

If you are on a budget I would go with at B18b1 and whichever is in your price range out of the EH and EJ hatch. 140hp/127ftlbs. should be plenty for you as a DD. You aren't going to win races, but it will get you where you want to go with no trouble. If you want you can always go LSvtec later if that suits your budget/plans.

There's nothing wrong with an h22 tranny except for non-sporty gearing like it's b-series brothers.

But like everyone else said, h2b can solve any tranny "issues" with an H swap.
