going from b16/b20b to b16/b18(a/b)?
Hello,
I previously had a b16/b20b turbo setup in my 95 civic coupe. To make a long story short, I was running on stock internals with a new tune on my AEM EMS and ended up killing piston number 2
now im looking at swapping in a sleeved b18a with 84mm bore (Since its cheaper than sleeving the existing b20.) I have tried searching but haven't found any distinct answers to my question which is
what parts will be compatible between my b20b and b18a and will I have to change any wiring or hardware?
I am under the impression that they will bolt up the same, use the same crank, water and oil pumps. my main concern is that the b18a is OBD0 and the b20b is OBD2 although since im only using the blocks this wont make a difference, correct?
Is there any compelling reason to pursue the b18b over the b18a if im using an ls/vtec turbo setup?
thanks in advance

Re: going from b16/b20b to b16/b18(a/b)? (Phenol312)
Your impression was correct. They are externally, the same block. You should be fine just replacing the block with the 1.8 block. You might loose a little torque, but not much, and thats a big "maybe" ya know. I did notice one thing when I just swapped out the B20 in my hatch for a B18B1. There is a black box on the back of the B18 that there wasnt on the B20, and there is a vaccum line that runs from the intake manifold, to this box. I forget what it is, but Im sure it wont cause you any problems. Also I dont think there is any big difference between the A and the B B18's, so you should be fine with either. You might have to swap out a plug or two from the B20 block onto the B18 block. A good idea would be to (if possible) take a good look at both of the motors and compare plugs. Hope this helps some!

thanks for confirming my thoughts...
torque loss shouldn't be an issue with the 84mm bore...
btw just so i dont cause confusion im referring to the b18a1 and not the b18a from the japanese vigor/accord

The older japanese vigor and accords came with a B18??? I never knew that. From what I know, the B18A was found in American 90-91 Integra's, and the B18A1 was found in 92-93 American Integra LS, RS, and GS, then the B18B1 was found in the 94-01 Integra LS, RS, and GS, and the SE.

well according to wikipedia (who knows if its right)
B18A
* Non-VTEC
* Found in:
o 1986-1989 Accord Aerodeck LXR-S/LX-S (Japan)
o 1986-1989 Accord EXL-S/EX-S (Japan)
o 1986-1989 Vigor MXL-S (Japan)
+ Displacement: 1834 cm³
+ Compression: 9.4:1
+ Bore: 81 mm
+ Stroke: 89 mm
+ Dual Keihin Carbs
+ Power: 160 hp (97 kW) @ 6100 rpm & 128 ft·lbf (164 N·m) @ 4700 rpm
+ Transmission: A2N5, E2N5
* This engine is not 100% related to the other B series engines. It is a destroked Honda B20A engine.
so i think it just shares the name and nothing else.

It is a possibility... I remember reading an issue of Honda Tuning a year or two ago talking about a ~160hp B-series non-vtec from Japan, and it not having alot of relation to the other b-series motors. You may be correct sir!
