It is a SI so it is a 5spd. I would just go with a used tranny. Be for you put it in split the case check the syncros and replace the shaft bearing

that would be a fair price considering they would be taking out the tranny and putting it back in and it'll be a practically new tranny. but i'd go with a used one too. and checking synchros aren't that easy if you've never rebuilt a tranny before. and you need a press to replace the bearins on the main shaft and countershaft

pay 300 for a used tranny and 150 new clutch and resurface the flywheel and pay the shop 250 to do the labor.
Good luck! and run Gm Syncro Mesh friction modified tranny oil in the 5spd just in case it has small grinds.

Can you have a shop mechanic check the synchros and bearings and if so, how much would something like that run.
I too, am having some tranny problems and am actually thinking about buying a complete swap from hmotorsonline. If I were to pay 1500 for just the tranny I'd rather put in a little extra and get the b16 motor swap

that wouldn't be a bad way to go, most service shops dont rebuild trannys you'd have to take it to a tranny shop. i believe automatic transmission shops should know how rebuild. but like dude said i'd just get a used one with a warranty or something

A rebuilt tranny will never be as reliable as a stock one. I would never pay for a rebuilt one when you can find a used but in great condition one for hundreds of dollars less.

^^^ its about turn around time with me.. i dont have time to look for a new one, i dont have time to remove & reinstall my trans & it just seems easier to pay for it.. i have asked alot of mechainics & they said the price was pretty fair

Try to get some firsthand reviews on the places you are considering. Does it come with any kind of warranty?

Re: getting my trans rebuilt... price???
i rebuilt my own tranny. it cost me about 400 in parts. replaced all my bearing cuz the had two had play and me 1st and 2nd gear synchros were worn out along with the dog teeth in the 1st and 2nd gear. whoever owned my car before probably learned to drive stick on this car cause I had never seen dog teeth so badly worn out. I used all OEM parts.
whoever said a rebuilt tranny will never be as reliable compared to stock one is wrong, if anything they are probably better cuz you dont know how badly abused the used one is.

If it is a time sensitive issue then you may have no choice. But if you can bite the bullet and do it yourself, then here isa good right -up about how to do it on a dual-cam tranny. I don't imagine that a single cam is too different that you couldn't work your way through. Give it a try!

Re: getting my trans rebuilt... price???
There is a transmission shop in Des Plaines at the intersection of Rand Rd and River Rd. It's on the NW side of the intersection, across the bike store; you'll see it, there are a bunch of cars parked there all the time. We had a transmission fixed there for a Lincoln and the cost was $1000. It might be less expensive for a civic transmission.
If you do check it out, let me know how much they want for rebuilding the transmission. I'd like to know.
