GENUINE Honda MTF vs. Conventional oil vs. Synthetic oil vs. ATF

Alright I'ma gonna change my tranny fluid in my Y21 tranny, now if I can't get the genuine honda MTF whats the next best thing?

Can I put any regular oil or only synthetic oil or ATF? I want to know the pro's and con's of each. And how long each oil is good to last before changing again?

srmofo 12-15-2008 01:14 PM

"search" button still works....ps, I run gm syncromesh

halocore 12-15-2008 01:42 PM

i have regular 10w30 in mine. Called the auto parts store and thats what they said.

Ya Digg 12-15-2008 02:32 PM

I also heard the gm syncromesh is good but what about using Royal pruple Syncormax?

96hb 12-15-2008 03:33 PM

I had some Mobil 1 0w30 laying around and I put that in mine when I changed it. Shifts exactly like it always did. No problems at all after 20k + miles.

GTlvr82 12-15-2008 03:49 PM

The new Honda MTF is badass. I went from feeling like my tranny was going to die to it shifting like butter a half hour after I put it in.

^^^Whats so new about it?

I've always heard GM synchromesh was good, is this better?

When was the last time you transmission had a fluid change? :p

It's recommended to run 5w30 or 10w30 in transmissions for the most part. Obviously, you can try other weights. People use all sorts of different types.

Stick with synthetic oils. Especially if you want to get longevity out of the fluid. Amsoil MTF (normally comes in 5w30) will probably last the longest out of all available fluids. Anything will really work, though - Honda MTF, GM Synchromesh, Amsoil MTF, any typical synthetic motor oil like Mobil1, etc. It's just like engine oil and should be maintained often as it takes serious abuse, too. But at minimum, should probably be changed at least once a year.

Actually according to the newsletter that came out to my local Honda Service guys...the Honda MTF actually replaces using 10w30/5w30 for the transmission. I'm a practicing mechanic (for the military) and I talked for about a half an hour to the mechanics there. They said it's solved all kinds of issues with customer's cars.

I believe the Honda MTF is basically a motor oil fortified for use in transmissions. Obviously motor oil works, but the MTF *should* produce better results. I vaguely remember reading that it has a higher sodium content than motor oil for smoother shifting, among other things.

The new MTF has a friction modifier that they say reacts better in colder weather/climates. I've heard it is also made by Amsoil, but havne't found the exact service bulletin for it yet to confirm that.

What do you mean it "replaces using" 10/5w30? Not sure what you're saying it does. What is it replacing? Or using?

It's blended by Idemitsu.

^^Now I always use Mobil 1 5w-30 and Mobil 1 oil filter (M1-104) like a religion, on a side note I've heard you can use the K20 oil filter on the B-series and its slightly better, is this true? It is a little longer...

Now if I can't get honda MTF, what should I use Mobil 1 5w-30 or 10w-30? I live in VA and its pretty cold here in winter, so should I use diff weights for winter and summer? I'ma bought to change my tranny fluid everytime I change oil...

Personally if I couldn't get the MTF, I would use a name brand 10w-30 synthetic blend in winter and summer if I was going to change it that often. It would give most of the synthetic benefits with a reduced cost. You won't shear it much at all at that change interval. Full synth would be a waste of money.

I've always used Honda MTF. The first time I changed it, I noticed a difference with smoother shifts...

Also, have friends that use regular synthetic 5w-30 with no issues or difference from Honda MTF. I personally prefer Honda MTF.

K-series vs. B-series oil filter

Ok I've got some friends that put K-series oil filter on their B-series engine.

Now the K oil filter is slightly longer and slightly skinnier, compared to the B oil filter.

So is the K oil filter better in filtering the oil and repressurizing it back into the system compared to B? Or are the differences minuit?

^^Nobody has ever put a K-series oil filter on a B-series engine????

Anybody

pinoy2o9 12-15-2008 07:24 PM

^^^ seems odd to putt a k series filter?

I know but my friends put K20 oil filters on thier B engines, and the K filter is

slightly longer and skinnier, so does anybody know if thiers a real difference? I've heard

the k filter is better?

srmofo 12-15-2008 07:35 PM

without cutting it open I wouldnt know for sure, but its only a filter and if it is the same brand than I highly doubt they are going to use a different kind of element inside, the only thing you are probaly gonna change is the shape/size

drave 12-15-2008 07:36 PM

Wtf are you talking about? There's only 1 Honda oil filter..

trrbl1bmx 12-15-2008 07:39 PM

OEM Honda filters are the same. S2000 uses a different filter than the norm as well as the Insight. Other than that for the most part they are all the same. Your friend is crazy.

Na yo, thiers the new K-series oil filter which is different in shape and size compared to the old B-series oil filter.

The new K-series goes on the old B-series engines, but its slightly different, some people say its better so is it?

Has anybody other than me put K-series oil filter on B-series engines???
