General civic SI questions.

Hello all, I have had a 92 4 door civic DX for quite some time now. It's an extremely beat up car, and the engine is finally starting to go bad. Now I don't have a lot of money to spend on a car and am interested in getting a civic SI, because its about 60 hp more than my car, and you can't lose with Honda reliability.
Now I've seen some Si's stated at 125 hp, and some at 160, does anyone know when their engine changed? I'd prefer the 160 version, heh.
Now at a used car lot if I could find one, what would be a price that wouldn't be a waste of money. I've looked online and seen them for around 9,000 at the lowest for the 160 hp version i think. Now this seems a little steep for me, and I might as well get a 95ish 240sx for cheaper and more sportiness.
And if there's any problems that these engines have that I should check out for.
Thanks for any info you can give me.

the 92-95 Si(hatch) had the 125 hp motor
the 99-00 Si(coupe) had the 160 hp motor

The 160 hp Si engine is the B16A2 from the 99/00 Civic Si coupe which is pretty much the engine from the higher-end Del Sol. It's a DOHC. The 125 hp engine (D16Z6) is from the 92-95 Civic Si (or 93-95 Civic EX coupe). It's a SOHC.

I dont mean to steal you topic but I was wpnderin which swap would be easiest? I am goin to change my motor soon cuz it burnin alot of oil and plus i want something with alittle more power. I would like bottem end power if that makes anydifferece.
Sorry again for steal your post!

They would both be fairly easy...don't think there is any difference other than that the 92-95 SI motor is OBDI and the 99-00 SI motor is OBDII. If you gonna convert, that will be more $

Re: (jeffk182)

or you could just use a sirII obd I engine. swaps are relativly the same, if you can do one you can do another.

Re: (jeffk182)

The 125 hp is in 92-95 si hatches or del sol si's. The 160 hp dohc b16 can be found in VTEC del sols, 99-00 civic si's. You could swap engines for less $$ and a sleeper look but that takes alotta work and if you bought a 99-00 Si or a VTEC del sol you would be rollin' in style.

First the b16a3(160hp dohc vtec) was only available in the del sol vtec. The b16a2 was ONLY available in the 99-00 civic si.........there are other options if you wanna look at other than U.S. market engines........................John

There are no SI's from 96-98 here in the US. And what 125hp B16 in 92-95 SI hatches are you talking about?

yeah there is some misinformation over there.

Re: (ABK)

You guys are right, I changed it. And the 125 hp SI hatch was the sohc b16. I just lumped in the 99-00 SI's with the other 6g civics.

Sly_Samba 07-28-2004 08:03 AM

no your still wrong a hatch never had a b16 on our side of the pond..They did however have d16's...

I really hope your joking, stop giving wrong info. the 92-95 si motor was a SOHC while the 99-00 si motor is DOHC with alot more power. but they both lack loads of torque. But yes the 92-95 SOHC is OBD1 while the DOHC is OBD2, not mine though:) mines OBD1!

okay, first off if it is money you are worried about and 9K seems high, i would not consider an si coupe. its hard to find one for less than 8,500 dollars. and that is in any condition to be honest. and the for the nissan, it can become a expensive little project. especially if you start to have problems.
if it were me and i was in your situation i would just hold on to what you got and do some minor engine work while saving money for later. or you can peice together a honda coupe or hatch, just an example, and find a good DOHC motor and slap it in. that will give you the honda reliability and a faster car. just my $.02. but whatever you do good luck. and i am shure we here at h-t can help along the way. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

1992-1995 civc si / ex came with the d16z6 sohc vtec which is 125 hp, the 1994-1998 ( not sure about the years ) del sol vtec came with the dohc vtec b16a3 rated at 160 hp, and finally the 1999-2000 civic si came with the dohc vtec b16a2 which is also 160 hp.

justanotherbluesi 07-28-2004 09:27 AM

I would go with a 99-00 civic Si , i have a 99 whcih i love, it is gets great gas mileage and has been awsome for the drive back and forth to school everyday. I have 107k on it and it still runs perfect. I am actually trying to sell it since i graduated and i am gona be moving up to an s2000, so if you want a clean and good running Si ill, sell you mine, but if not i would definitly recomend the 99-00Si, its a great car for reliability and gas mileage.

92-95 Civic Si=Single Cam VTEC=125hp
99-00 Civic Si=Dual Cam VTEC=160hp

electronb16si 07-28-2004 09:38 AM

Run your car to the ground and save up some more loot then buy an Si in good condition. Don't settle for a beat up one or your going to regret it later.

You guys have to realize that those are HP at the flywheel, HP at the wheels will always be 20-30 HP less due to HP loss from the flywheel to transmission to the wheels. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

beaterdriver 07-28-2004 10:06 AM

you buy a 99-00 si, you might hit high 14's in the quarter.

you toss a b16a in your hatch, you might hit high 13's in your car.

toss a itr motor in your hatch, should hit low 13's. my car did.

keep in mind this is on street tires https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

I dont think a 99-00si hits high 14's stock, or a b16 stock will be 13's.....

oh, that was with mods. i have seen a b16a in a 92-95 coupe run a 13.9. but it had bolt ons.

stock, will be lucky to hit low 15's in 00si. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif

Re: (beaterdriver)

Just a rant...

92-95 Si = 125 hp@6,600 / 106 lb-ft@5,200
99-00 Si = 160 hp@7,600 / 111 lb-ft@7,000

I see a lot of people talking about horsepower and wonder if anybody really cares at all about torque. Now although the B16 does make quite a bit more hp in the top end, the differences in torque values between the D16 and B16 are very little.

Before any haters pounce on me, I'm not saying that a stock D16 will beat a stock B16, or keep up with it for that matter. I'm just saying that neither engine will get you up and moving quickly. Reliability and cost aside, if you're looking to do a swap that has great low-end then start looking towards a vtec B18 or B20. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

[offtopic] Aren't the b16a2's rated at 170hp as the a1's are 160? or is that JDM b16a2's only? [offtopic/]
