Gas question
I work at a gas station and i always see people leave their cars on when they pump gas? isnt it not safe to pump while your car is on? or am i retarded and completely wrong! fill me in!

i dont do it its just i see people do it, even though we have stickers saying turn your car off, turn your cell off no lighters

basically it is okay, and we never turn the car off when we are filling up the cars in Asia
however, this is North America, they don't want any potential risk involved

They did a pretty extensive experiment with this on myth busters (discovery channel).
Most fires from gas pumps are a result of the static electricity that gets built up from getting in and out of your car and then going to touch the pump. The chances are extremely slim because the combination of oxygen and vapor from the gas must be at a very specific amount of each in order for them to ignite.
They set up a simulation in an enclosed chamber where they exposed numerous static shocks to gas vapor and they couldn't get it to explode. They tried a bunch of times. They also tried a cell phone, and a few other combinations. Nothing worked because the mixture of vapor and oxygen must be so specific.
