gas mileage too good to be true?
i have a 94 civic ex with like 170k on it. pretty much completely stock except for suspension and no a/c or heat (dont ask). i basically just use it for going to work and back when my $$ is running low because my truck is a gas hog.
here's the story:
i never put gas in the car unless it really needs it. when i have to turn the key on and off like 3 times to prime the pump so it will start is when i get gas. usually that is about 40 miles after the gas needle stops moving. i know this is bad but i dont give a ****. i do this every week so i know the gas tank pretty well by now.
this past monday i put 10 dollars of gas in my car pretty much when it was completely empty. 10 bucks @ 2.79 a gallon got me like 3/8 of a tank, maybe a little more. i drive 40-41 miles a day round trip to work and back according to my truck's odometer and mapquest ALL HIGHWAY. i literally live like 1/4 mile from the highway and work right off the exit. at this point (thursday) i have driven 160 miles on the same $10 worth of gas and i can most definately make it to work and back tomorrow because the needle is still above E. according to my calculations, this is at least 45mpg but will be closer to 50 after tomorrow. is this possible with a properly running car??
i do between 75-85mph and i barely ever floor it or downshift because the POS burns oil and i really dont like to call attention to myself with a giant cloud of smoke since driving a gay purple civic already draws more than enough attention than i'd like.
its a d16z6 with a 5speed btw

prolly bkuz u dont have a full tank which makes teh car heavier, and have a lighter load, due to less gas, having the car not work as hard
something like that
something like that

45-50mpg in a ex is pure BS.
You're not going to get that unless you're in a cx or vx

Pay attention to exactly how much gas you are putting into it next time and then just divide the number of miles you drive into the amount of gas you put in and you will find out exactly how many mpg you are getting. I would have a hard time believing this if it burns oil so badly. You'd think it isn't running at "optimum condition," which should hinder gas mileage. But, if that is what you get, then I wouldn't argue about it.
I probably only get about 25-27 mpg in my Civic and about 15-16 in my Sierra.

I average about 37MPG in my 94 hatch w/ a D15B VTEC and that includes some 3rd gear VTEC in the passing lane. I drive about 25 miles highway to & from work each day.

i have foudn the best way to calculate milage is by the full tank.
fill up. set trip odometer.
drive until you are ready to put gas in again, and on the second fill up (must be a fill up) record how much gasoline it took to fill it up...then divide the miles on your trip odometer by the amount you put in to fill up the tank.
using this methind i find my h22 accord wagon averages 24mpg in mixed city and highway driving, my b18c1 civic ex abs sedan was able to hit as high as 32mpg on highway only driving, and same with my h22 civic hatch.

Re: (v4lu3s)
how else would you be able to accurately verify mileage? wouldn't this be the only effective means, with any other method being speculation at best?

well i ran it untill it was pretty much on fumes. i had to turn the key on and off 3 times just so the pump would actually pick up fuel. i put 10 bucks in it at that point and it was 2.79 a gallon. that equals approx 3.6 gallons. my trip to work is 20.3 each way and i have made 9 trips on the same 10 bucks worth of gas ontop of a trip to the bank and to the store for food. that is at LEAST 180 miles on 3.6 gallons of gas and the car is still running. i know its hard to believe but its true.
btw, it only burns oil when i hit like 5k rpms

why wouldnt i? i barely ever hit vtec, i have a new o2 sensor, good plug wires, lighter wheels, and the a/c is completely removed. maybe i wouldnt if i had some riced out pos with a fart can, cheesy intake, and some other mods that probably hinder performance.

just reset ur trip od when you fill up... drive till like half a tank... fill up... divide trip od mileage by the gal's that it takes to fill it up... that sounds like too good of mileage.

If any civic had the potential to get that they would be scarce to find one for sale now with gas prices.

I was driving a friend's '90 hatch for awhile and that thing routinely got 40 MPG. I think that the biggest problem is that a lot of people just have no f-ing clue how to drive a car - hell my '93 Accord with 170K on the odo still gets 28 MPG on the highway and my H22 hatch is pulling down over 30 MPG because I don't floor it when I want it to move... the difference in acceleration from a slight throttle input vs. WOT is not much at all when you're doing 80 MPH. My turbo B18C5 Si (when I had it, 3 years ago) pulled down 32 MPG on a 2 hour road trip while making 270 whp on the dyno... it's all about how you drive it.

Because your claims are about as unscientific as you can get. You may or may not have had an empty tank before you filled it up. You don't even have a working odometer and you go by the stock (crappy) gas gauge? If you really like calculating gas mileage that way, then great, but don't go expecting anybody to believe it.
