Default Gas mileage?? 1998 civic hatchback HELP!!!

I have a 1998 honda civic hatchback, stock dx, no ac, y7 with y8 manifold, no check engine light. I got 296 miles on a full tank. Questions, does that seem right.

Calculate the exact gas mileage (mpg) from several tanks of gas (miles driven/gallons burned). Post the numbers and mention whether mileage is from city, hwy, or city+hwy driving.

Ok. From what I've got so far, I'm not sure the exact gallon rate that was at a full tank. But I filled the tank up, drove 296 miles hwy commuting 100 miles round trip per 5 day. Plus some city. Ill calculate exact money spent till fill up tank and re-set the odometer an see what happened's

Fill tank
Reset tripmeter
Drive until down to 1/4 tank
Refill tank
Divide tripmeter reading at second refill by gallons on second refill.

There's no reason to drive it all the way down to full, and that can be unhealthy for your fuel system. Assuming that's what you did, though, nearly 296 miles from a full tank comes out a hair shy of 30 MPG. Is your car standard, or automatic? What speeds are you cruising on the highway?

I normally run from completely full until my trip hits 100 miles then fill it again and divide the miles by the gallons on the pump. As jbp said, I just like 100 miles as a marker rather than where my gauge is. Makes me want to drive around so i can hit the 100 and see lol

seems right if you have a heavy foot and a auto or a really heavy foot, dirty air filter and a manual trans. clean filter, conservative acceleration and a manual trans- 35+.

That sounds about right.
In my 99 Civic DX 5spd Ac/Ps, I get around 280-320 city after my full tune-up which was done earlier this year.
I live in an area with many hills so there's lots of heavy gas going up and cruising in neutral going down.
For the past few full tanks I got at least 20 over or 20 under 300 miles, my most recent one had me at 270 miles because of my stripped CPK sensor and O2 sensor, causing me to run in limp mode. I fixed that so it should be normal again this time around.

$40 gives me a full tank, and where I live gas prices were around $4.7+/- regular. (now hitting $4.9)
assuming that i'm not a dumbass, that's:
$40 / $4.7 = 8.51 gallons
300 miles / 8.51 gallons = 35.2 mpg

Next time you go to the gas station, fill it up and top it off, reset the tripmeter and just drive either:
1) At your typical style
2) Hypermiling
It'd be interesting to compare your normal driving style to hypermiling and see the mpg difference.
