Mine lifted right out. Maybe you need to fidget with it a little bit more?

Are you sure you unbolted the right cap? You didn't take apart the fuel level sensor did you?

The first time I pulled my fuel pump it was kinda tough, the gasket must have slightly fused, but it did come off. It's also a lot easier to do it when you take the hoses off the top first since they don't have much slack.

it's angled in there.

====== <-metal plate
| |
\ \ <--pump
\ \ _____
\_______\ <---soft fuel filter
front of car back of car

you have to play with it til it comes out.
btw, i installed mine in a 96 civic, so i'm positive i'm talking about the same thing.

you should have let the fuel out through the fuel filter so it wouldn' have any pressure to spill gas.Pull it up with it leaning towards the front of the car,kinda like its on a hinge but not.
